Show Page 10 Wednesday, August 16, 1978 MUSIQas NOTES ; By Jay Meehan Radio Station KPRQ The 1978 Arts and Bluegrass Festival is upon us and, musicwise, before the. weekend is through, our cup will runeth over. Betwixt the landscape oils, pottery, stained glass, and such on Main Street; there will emerge a variety of musical forms. There will be folk singing with Andy Monaco and Brian Fetzer, Jazz with an ensemble led by Henry Wilking and J.D. Moffatt, and country rock with the "Hat Band". And this is just on Main Street. If you want your music traditional, acoustic, hot and continuous, well, "Treasure Hollow," at the base of the ski run will be your cup of tea. That, of course , is where one of the finest bluegrass festivals ever to hit the Western U.S. will be taking place. It's hard to believe that the "Country Gentlemen" are actually going to be in Park City for two days. A list of the performers who have spent time in Charlie Wallers famed group would read like a "Who's Who" of Bluegrass and the current edition seems as good as any of them. Doyle La wson will make other mandolin pickers want to break his fingers.... slowly. If that isn't enough we get the "Dillards" too. Rodney and the boys no doubt will knock our collective socks off., Doug Dillard of course is into other things but Billy Ray Latham has got to be one of the more interesting 5-string banjo practitioners around. Billy Ray cut his bluegrass teelh with the now legendary "Kentucky Colonels" along with Clarence and Roland White and Roger Bush, but of late, as you shall see, he has been involved in the "Experimental" school and the great Dean Webb is still with the group. Another super mandolinist. Don't forget the "Deseret String Band," "Stormy Mountain Boys," "Bitter Creek," the "Shupe Family Fiddlers," and "Hot Rize" from Boulder. The word is that if it works out this time it will become an annual festival separate from the Art Festival. It would be nice to see a lot of local support. See you there. In 1911, he opened his first photographic studio and : became known for his direct approach to photography. His photographic examinations of shells and vegetables are famous in photographic circles, as well as images of landscapes, portraits and nudes. He was the first. And he specialized in black and white photography. Cole Weston moved to Carmel, California, in 1946, at his father's request, to assist with all aspects of the elder photographers's black and white work. Cole continued con-tinued assisting the ailing photographer in addition to becoming highly respected himself for his own color portrait and landscape work. When Edward Weston died in 1958, Cole took' over, as executor for the Edward Weston estate which involved in-volved printing from the original negatives and signing them according to his father's will, "Negative by Edward Weston, Print by Cole Weston." He continues this today. Cole Weston's own work has appeared in Life, Look, Holiday, Reader's Digest and many other national magazines. Books such as the Sierra Club's Not Man Apart and Rachel Carson's The Sea Around Us as well as many record album covers, calendars and posters have used his seascapes. In addition, he has contributed to the U.S. State Department's "Art in the Embassies" program. Most of Cole Weston's professional career has been dedicated to his father's work, either as his assistant or in promoting his father around the country. "I'm continuing his work," notes the younger Weston.
