Show Page9 Wednesday, June 14, 1978 Louis Malle set out to make Pretty Baby because he was moved by the recollections of a prostitute named Violet. The film, based on the book StoryviUe, New Orleans tries to capture the life led by the women of the brothels in the early 1900s. While the subject is unusual and in many ways fascinating, Malle's limp direction bogs down the film, creating mediocrity where there should have been eloquence. It is unfortunate that the promising idea which was the inspiration for Pretty Kaby never quite came to fruition. Malle has interwoven Violet's story with that of E.J. Bollocq, a photographer whose portraits of the Storyville district women are now famous for their beauty. The story could have been an intriguing blend of fact and fiction but Malle understood neither Violet nor Bollocq and turned the film into a meaningless encounter. Indeed, it seems that Malle understood little about the character of the women of Storyville for the characters in the film have no flesh to them. Malle might have been commenting on the emptiness of the lives of the prostitutes, though this seems doubtful in light of his inability to bring any depth, even to Bollocq or any of the patrons. The failure of the characterizations makes 1'retly Habv a film with little substance. The film is redeemed in two areas, The cinematography and the sheer poignancy of the womens' situation. The cinematography is easy to explain. The director of photography was Sven Nikuist, a man whose work is synonomous with excellence. The film was beautifully shot, and that beauty alone is almost worth the price of admission. The second redeeming quality is the atmosphere created by the brothel itself. In one scene, the girls have a day off, only to be trapped inside by a rainstorm. With nothing to do to entertain themselves they finally decide to play a game of hide-and-seek with Bollocq. The game is played with youthful exuberance. After having to cater to male fantasy (games) all week long, the women have a chance to relieve their boredom in a childlike manner; one without pretension. Later, when Violet runs away to Bollocq's home, the full irony of the young girl's life is revealed. The 12-year-old girlwoman has been raised in a brothel, so consequently cannot read, but can paint her face. She cannot play children's games, but she can be a seductive woman. Her world is that of a child, except for the bedroom. Yet, aside for some of the situations which work on the strength of the scene and in spite of Malle's direction, the film lacks that which should have been strongest; human understanding. It is like a painted lady, alluring, but beneath the surface, quite false. Petition Protests Silver Springs Wr" I -, ' J III 1 t W Brooke Shields distracts photographer Keith Carradine as he sets up his equipment to take a photo of a group of women living in the red light district of 1917 New Orleans known as Storyville in Paramount Pictures' "Pretty Baby." A petition protesting the proposed Silver Springs development in Snyderville was scheduled to be presented Tuesday, June 13, to the Summit County Board of Commissioners. Reportedly initiated by Snyderville resident Ike Koleman on behalf of "the area residents of western Summit County," the petition requests that the commission reject the development (formerly called Canyon Rim) master plan. After stating the county planning commission "is seated with persons of apparent vested interests in this project," the document lists nine reasons why the development should not be granted approval. The petition contends that County Commission and Planning Commission member Bill Wallin has "personal business negotiations with the owners of this project and is without question in a position of conflict of interest." It contends outgoing county planner Max Greenhalgh is "now engaged in developing" and "should completely withdraw from the commission." It claims Donna Dearden, manager of Park City's First Security-Bank, Security-Bank, and real estate salesman Mike Ivers "stand to gain substantially" from the project and "are questionable in their ability to fairly evaluate this project." Citing a "desperate need for development to be reasonably contained," the petition asks that a five-member five-member committee composed of area residents with no vested interests in land development be appointed to make recommendations regarding proposed growth. In its request that the Silver Springs master plan be denied, the petition cited the following reasons : 1. The projected population figure for the proposed 1,277 units would be 4,891 rather than the 2,130 Community Arts Council Forming A group of Park City residents have met to organize organ-ize a community arts council. coun-cil. The purpose of the council is to consolidate the various arts interests in Park City and to insure that the arts become an integral part of community planning. The organization process began last spring when a group of Parkites gathered with representatives of the Utah Arts Council's community com-munity development program. pro-gram. The representatives outlined the functions of a community arts council. They noted that one of its ' primary functions is to act as,, a pressure group for the arts I within the community by - fostering participation and initiating new arts programs. pro-grams. The council can also serve as a coordinating body setting up a long-range calendar of events for touring and local oerforming groups. Beyond this coordination, coordin-ation, the council can handle publicity and ticket sales, arrange for the performance facility and, in general, support the event in every way. Another major role of the community arts council is to act as a clearing house for financial grants from various institutions. As a non-profit organization, the council would be able to apply for funds from the State arts agency or federal sources to help support and finance local cultural events. In a meeting last month, a steering committee was nbminajed to select potential members for the board of directors. The committee will nominate the board of directors for approval by the general membership. Interested Inter-ested parties should attend the next meeting which will be announced soon. uguie picticmcti oy uie developers. The land designated as a school site should be increased from 10.5 acres to 38 acres. 2. The residential property taxes realized from Silver Springs will not cover the cost of government services required. 3. The availability of water has not been demonstrated and the master plan should "revolve around available water and not vice versa." 4. Ten percent of Undevelopable Un-developable land should be donated for public use. 5. The project will result in "total obliteration of existing meadnwland. much forest land and the life that they support." 6. Route 224 cannot handle the increased traffic load and the state has "no formal plans" for widening the highway. 7. Area residents do not want the commercial enterprises planned in conjunction with the project. 8. "Unbridled development develop-ment will cause taxes to skyrocket for the entire county." 9.
