Show another pulled up the ventilating fan which had been secured with a rope by firemen on Main Street. According to Chief Kofford and other firemen, this was the key to containment. con-tainment. "If you don't get that room ventilated, ven-tilated, the smoke and heat builds up in the ceiling and then creeps down the sides and creates a mushroom," said Erne Anderson, company chief. "Everybody did their job," said Kofford. "The men got in there and cooled it down enough and ventilated it so it didn't flash and get four buildings." Three women also suited up. Two were of the force which had come from Summit Park. Firemen looked tired but relieved as they mopped out the area around 7:00p.m. Al Burns, the ambulance driver and EMT who had taken care of Millecam's hand earlier, wasn't through for the day as a radio message came that a ski injury had occurred at Park West. He accelerated ac-celerated toward the resort. Kofford said he would have to meet with Millecam later Tuesday evening to estimate the damages but he predicted they would be in the range of several thousands of dollars. The partition separating the kitchen from the hallway was a pile of char coal. Corners of the wallpaper drooped down in places and the paintings pain-tings on the south wall were damaged beyond repair. It was a bleak looking shell, a far cry from its light lunch days which had ended five days earlier when Millecam closed it. "We weren't making a profit," he said. Millecam added that he was hoping to reopen the Caboose in the summer when business was better. Many of the Car 19 workers helped battle the fire. Some were still shaken at opening time, but the richly decorated restaurant had only a slight smell of smoke. Millecam's son Randy Ran-dy said they would reopen later that Page 15 breathing device. He said, "The smoke was so thick you couldn't even see the flames." Firemen concentrated their efforts on the kitchen. Two Main Street hydrants were hooked up to two 750-gallon 750-gallon per-minute pumps. One truck was parked on Main Street and one behind the Caboose on Swede Alley. While firemen hosed down the building through the front door, others attempted to break through the Swede Alley entrance, which contained two false walls. At the same time, a fireman on the roof pushed a hole through the kitchen ceiling while fire trucks, fast attack truck, ambulance am-bulance and a Salt Lake television crew (in town for the mine closing) arrived on the scene. Police Chief Garth Wilkinson waved off traffic from above while police cars blocked traffic at the lower end of Main Street. Darrell LaFranier, of the Alamo Saloon located across the street from the Caboose, observed, "There were some firemen already suited up even before the fire truck arrived." John Bircumshaw, battalion chief, was one of the first firemen into the building after donning a protective air night. Randy said they didn't have any insurance. in-surance. "It was too expensive," he said. Kofford said the cause of the fire had not been determined completely. He said only that it started somewhere back by the radar range or steam table. Randy Millecam said the equipment equip-ment had not been used for a week but that it may have been left on. Another Car 19 employe speculated tha the fire might have been caused by deteriorating wiring. Wednesday, February 15,1978 For your real estate needs, Keith Vanderhoot, Gardner Realty Co.
