This year the tournaments have gone back to the more seasoned pros. That is until Monday in the rain-delayed Bob Hope Desert Classic when 26-year-old Bill Rogers won his first tournament since he joined the tour in 1974. The turning point of the day was on the 11th hole of the final round when 12-year-veteran Jerry McGee was putting pressure on the young Texan. After a poor drive and chip shot, Rogers sank a 65-foot wedge for a par 4. From that point on the round was Rogers ' . Rogers finished the five-round tournament with a 21-under-par 339, only two strokes ahead of McGee. With this victory, Rogers collected $45,000 while McGee went home with $25,650 for his second place finish. Basketball It was a week of upsets in the AP collegiate Top 10 as only two teams remained in the same position. The big news is the number one rating Arkansas received after defeating Texas A&M and TCU to raise its record to 23-1. Previously No. 1 ranked Kentucky dropped to No. 3 after losing to LSU 95-94 in overtime. Marquette moved up one notch to No. 2 as they were victorious vic-torious over Air Force and Creighton. UCLA, whose only two losses are to Notre Dame, is gradually climbing back to the top as they defeated Cal and Stanford to move into the No. 4 spot. Also moving up was Western Athletic Conference Con-ference leader New Mexico, who moved to No. 5 by virtue of their wins over Arizona and Arizona St. Notre Dame, ranked No. 4 last week, dropped to No. 7 due to an overtime loss to DePaul which moved from No. 11 to No. 8. North Carolina ranked 7th last week, dropped out of the Top 10 for the first time this year. They lost to Providence and fell to 11th. Unchanged from last week were No. 9 Louisville and No. 10 Michigan St. Looking briefly at the NBA standings after another week of action, it's Philadelphia holding a comfortable 8V2 game lead over New York in the Atlantic ,'; Division; . while in the Central J Division, San Antonio has increased its lead over l the Washington Bullets to 6V2 games. In the Western Conference, Denver leads Chicago by 6 full games in the Midwest Division while Portland's Por-tland's lead over Phoenix has been reduced to 6V2. Wednesday, February 15, 1978 NHL The standings in the NHL shape up this way as of Tuesday: In the Wales Conference, Montreal continues to dominate play as they now hold a 28-point lead over the L.A. Kings. Looking at the Adams Division, Buffalo and Boston are battling for the lead and at this time are tied with 75 points each. Moving to the Campbell Conference, it's the New York Islanders holding a slim one-point edge over Philadelphia in the Patrick division and in the Smythe Division, Chicago holds a 17-point lead over Vancouver. World Cup Skiing The Americans and Canadians had a red letter day against the world's skiing elite in the World Cup races held in Chamonix, France. The North Americans captured the downhill and special slalom both in the same day last Saturday. In the special slalom, it was 20-year-old Phil Mahre of the U.S. twice defeating defending World Cup champ Ingemar Stenmark as well as the other Bavarian stars. He won both heats by margins of more than IV2 seconds. Earlier in the day, the Canadians started things off as Ken Read and fellow Canadian Dave. Murray took first and second in the downhill race. ? This was Mahre's first World Cup victory since he won the giant slalom in Val d'Isere last year but he remains in third place in the World Cup standings behind Stenmark and Austria's Klaus Heidegger. ;, 13 1 Si Featuring: Live Maine Lobster Dinner $1 3.95 Pick you own irom our Link. 14 i Special: f''l,4 Fresh Red Snapper 368 Main Street 649-8981 6 to 1 1 p.m. NEAR COMPLETION - new 3 bdrm.
