Show Wednesday, February 15, 1978 Page 9 Toly Takes Two Downhills s Jeep Rally Feb. 18, 19 Park City racer Roxanne Toly posted two downhill wins in expert races held at Nordic Valley last Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, Toly finished the course-in 64.26 seconds to beat teammate Karri Hays by 2.03 seconds. Third place went to Ingrid Gustafson of Sun Valley. The following day, Toly, a member of the U.S. Development Team, again finished first among the expert ex-pert girls, this time ahead of Gustafson, who was second, and third place Karen Bur-teig Bur-teig of Jackson Hole. Sun Valley's Garret Walker also was a double winner. Walker won Thursday's Thur-sday's downhill race with a time of 120.00. He was followed by Andy Chambers, Jackson Hole, 123.12, and Jon Meckem, also from Jackson, 124.16. On Friday, Walker finished in front of Brent Bernard, Sun Valley, while Chambers slipped to third. Park City's Jordan Swen-son Swen-son finished first and second in the Senior Boys downhills. Duaine Brown eries Roxanne Toly and Karri Hays finished strong in the downhill race at Nordic Valley last weekend. In center is coach Bob Marsh. Local skiers made a clean sweep of Thursday's senior race. The Carpenter's participated in ! the Equitable Challenge local competition here. Families who ski together have been competing in the Equitable Challenge across the country. The local winners win-ners having the lowest adjusted ad-justed combined times will advance to one of the 6 regional competitions held at major ski areas nationwide. nation-wide. One family team from each Regional will then qualify to receive an all expense ex-pense paid trip to the National Finals at Snowbird, Utah on March 28-30. The Equitable Family Ski Challenge does not impose any entry fee or other charge (individual areas may charge a small . administrative ad-ministrative fee). Families may enter as often as they wish and in as many team combinations as they like, consisting of Father-son, Mother-son, Father-daughter, Father-daughter, and Mother-daughter. The fifth race of the Duaine Brown Grand Prix of Ski Racing series is scheduled for Park City Resort February 16th and 17th, with qualifications on Thursday and the finals on Friday. To date, 65 racers have registered to compete for the $300 first prize in the B circuit cir-cuit pro race. All are gearing up for the finals to be held at Grand Targhee, which offers a $1,000 winner's take. Rick Newton, "tour director" direc-tor" for the Intermountain Professional Ski Racers Association, said anyone who is a IPSRA member can enter the race for a $30 fee. He said officials would split the field in half Thursday afternoon, af-ternoon, with racers running each side of identical dual slalom courses. The 32 fastest racers would qualif for Friday's race. Teams can enter the competition com-petition for $100 per team plus the entry fee, Newton said. They are eligible for a $1,000 first prize in the spring finals, as well as individual prizes. Former University of Utah racer Jean Peter Ostbye is currently in first place m the individual standings followed by Bob Davis, Dan Susshn, Rick Newton and Bill Skinner. In the team standings, Wolfe's is first, followed closely by Sunset Sports Center, the Lifthaus at Solitude, Mother Karens at Snowbird, and the Ski Connection. The next firmly scheduled race is April 3 and 4 at Alta, although Newton expects two races to be run in March. The 14th Annual Snow Rally will be held February 18th and 19th in Deer Valley. The jeep rally is expected to draw a total of 4,000 spectators spec-tators from the Intermountain Intermoun-tain area as well as from California, Montana, Oregon; Washington and even a few Eastcoasters. It will feature a 1,000-foot hill climb in unplowed snow. "If they can go, they're in. If not. they're rubbed out!" commented snow rally co-chairman co-chairman Bruce Ditzer of the Skyline Jeep Club. There will be a total of seven or eight buggy classes at the weekend rally, and four or five 4-wheel classes. Cash prizes will be awarded to those attaining the most footage on the hillside. The Deer Valley property was leased from the Royal Street Land Company and bond has been posted for clean-up both immediately following the rally and again in the springtime after the snow has melted.
