She wants a daddy and a baby and a crazy, raucous, family dinner hour. Rhythm is interrupted. So is security. We are all going through it the divorced, separated, widowed, never-been-married mothers with children under 18... I am not willing to wait for the next man. Maybe he will come, maybe he won't... I am a single mother now. I want a fulfilling life now." These are not the feelings of one isolated single-mother but rather a common cry of numerous women found in this situation. The single-parent family is becoming less and less of a phenomenon today and more and more a common com-mon occurance. Psychologists have labeled them "pathogenic families" but those who are experiencing it simply feel as though they are an alternative life style. Social scientists deem the children to be "culturally deprived-the victims of a broken home," but these children and their mothers want to be just like their friends and feel that they are. Because the single-mother experience is a relatively new one, many mothers who find themselves in this situation know' nothing about it and definitely have had no training in how to handle it. They receive plenty of criticism but very little practical help. As a result of this need has come Momma, The Sourcebook for Single Mothers. Momma is a collection of writings for single-mothers single-mothers written by single-mothers and edited by single-mothers because it is felt that "nobody else knows what we're all about." Momma got its start when Karol Hope and Lisa Connelly organized a small group of Los Angeles women who were interested in talking about what it means to be a single mother. From that small group developed the Momma organization with chapters around the country jand a national newspaper also called Momma. Momma, The Sourcebook for Single Mothers contains the best of the Momma newspaper and lots more. The book covers well the entire spectrum of the single-mother experience from money to sex to working to raising kids. The reader immediately im-mediately begins to identify with the book on a feeling level with the "Voices" which are heard from single-mothers across the country. These "Voices" discuss such feelings as being alone, responsible, overworked, tired pleased, afraid, hilarious, touched, progressing, angry, hopeful, ostracized, respected on top of it all. Feelings of resentment are expressed right along with the feelings of pride at having made it or the discouragement at having not. Some of the emotions are conflicting yet very real. A sense of relief is felt by the reader because for one of the first times they no longer feel as though they are the only one going through what they are going through. They are not all alone! After that comes good practical knowledge on a variety of important topics. One section deals with divorce laws, how to handle those laws, the rights of the individuals involved, what to expect and then enforcing court orders. Main Street 649-8051 DOWN UNDER "ANDREA" THIS WEEKEND Another section discusses the common money problems which go along with the situation. The Federal Government's Aid For Dependent Children program is one important topic along with how to deal with the Welfare System and unjust un-just wages and again, just what to expect. Another practical subject discussed is the sex situation of the woman alone. Articles are presented on celibacy, falling in love again, and living together which give much food for thought. The single-mother has become a common frequenter of the college scene in more recent years. Momma gives inspiration to those women who are contemplating going back to school by providing first hand accounts of others who have done it and who are now working at fulfilling jobs as a result. Other assorted topics discussed are being supermom, day care, women and politics, co-parenting, co-parenting, and step-mothering. Now if you are or know a single-father who is feeling left out through this whole thing, rest at ease because Momma also has a section just for the single-fathers written by single-fathers on their experience. All in all it is felt by the author of this review that Momma, the Sourcebook for Single Mothers is a long needed and well-written and edited resource for those individuals who are already single-handedly raising a family or who are seriously contemplating it. It is a realistic account ac-count of the experience which in no way makes it out to be either a "rose garden" or "the pits."The situation simply is and thus can be made to be whatever the people involved wish to make it. What Momma does is present-a variety of alternatives which then can be chosen from. But for those of you who are noi it. this situation nor feel you ever will be, don't think that you should pass this book by. Mal.' i know someone in this situation. It o;in !:; liunung but help you to understand more what makes this person tick, why they are doing what they are doing and why they feel the way they do. The emergence of the petition has muddied the waters of an already troubled sewer district. The State Health Department and the Environmental Protection Agency have been exerting strong pressure on the city to fight for the regional treatment plant and the EPA has alluded to possible fines and a ban on new sewer connections if An attemDt last June to pass a bond the new facility is not approved. It cites 13 MENTAL HEALTH reasons why the city should not become part of the district. In a letter to the local newspapers, City Treasurer Decker last week addressed each of the 13 points, pointing out what he felt to be misleading or incorrect statements. If the bond election passes, the petition may be taken to court since the city has a contractual obligation to the district and its ability to withdraw has been questioned by some. A court ruling favorable to the district could allow bond sales to proceed prior to the November election. Are You Perfect? Dr. Ford McBride Timpanogos Community Mental Health Center Did you know, according to the theory of aerodynamics, aerodyna-mics, laboratory tests and wind tunnel experiments, the bumble bee should not be able to fly. This is because the size, weight, and shape of its body in relation to the total wing-spread make flying fly-ing impossible. But the bumble bee, being ignorant of these profound truths, goes ahead and flies anyway. How many people do you know who are perfect? Regardless of their social status, accomplishments or financial standing, everyone has imperfections. If all of us have inferiorities then why do some people have so-called inferiority complexes and others don't? Research shows that it is not the imperfection that is important, but how the person reacts to his or her inferiorities. Whether or not you become a victim of you imperfection is determined by the particular particu-lar emotion reaction that goes on inside of you. If you have a strong negative reaction to the disability, an inferiority complex could develop. On the other hand, if you have an objective understanding of the defect or weakness you can compensate com-pensate by developing other personality strengths. The physically unattractive unattrac-tive boy or girl may develop an exceptionally pleasing personality, the puny boy may turn from athletics to scholarship and the mediocre medio-cre nobody may become the grand imperial potentate of some secret order. The entire cosmetics industry has been developed around minimizing undesirable facial fa-cial features and emphasising emphasis-ing desirable ones. 'Unfortunately, not all efforts to overcome inferiorities inferiori-ties are desirable and useful. The child who feels insecure may show off to get attention and raise his status in the eyes of others and himself. The person who feels unloved un-loved and frustrated may eat too much. It isn't easy, but an idea worth remembering is when life hands you a lemon, make lemonade. Dr. McBride can be seen every Wednesday on Channel Chan-nel ll's "Newsroom" 6:00 and 11:00 pm.
