The Academy Awards quite often skip over true talent to nomninate a box office draw, but Pacino's nominating roles were not necessarily the easy stereotypes used by many big stars. Instead, Pacino has worked a variety of characters and played them well. Dog Day Afternoon and Pacino both deserved ; the Academy Award nominations they received. Dog Day Afternoon is dominated by an excellent ex-cellent performance from' Pacino, although the film is not his alone. The supporting cast is excellent ex-cellent from the asmatic bank guard to the pizza delivery boy. y-;' The story line of the film is drawn from a true incident that occurred in New York City several years ago. Two bank robbers were trapped inside in-side a bank when the police were alerted by an insurance agent who noticed peculiar occurences oc-curences inside the building. The robbers held the bank staff as hostages and demanded that they be flown out of the country. The movie chronicles . the bizzare events thatoccured that day. Hog Day Afternoon is told as a convincing, tight film. Directed by Sydney Lumet, it strikes a delicate balance between tension and humor, and maintains that balance throughout the length of the flick. Lumet made Pacino the focal point of the film but he also demanded that the rest of the cast give their characters a highly effective treatment, giving the picture a tightly woven, dramatic fabric. Lumet's direction can't be faulted. The film is as tasteful, energetic, humorous and serious as any seen last year. And just as important, the film does not cop out in the ending. It does not really matter if Pacino wins an Oscar. Cinema lovers are now sure that he is one of the most talented actors working today. Dog Day Afternoon doesn't have to win any Oscars either. It will stand as one of the memorable films of the past year.
