Show Wednesday, July 5, 1978 Page 7 Oakley Rodeo Complete With Donny and Gov. By Nan Chalat On Monday and Tuesday cars lined Highway 189, flanked Center Street and double parked halfway up Cow Alley in downtown Oakley. Approximately 3,000 spectators, including Governor Matheson, filled Oakley's stadium for the annual Independence Day Rodeo. My 14-year-old friend Carey spent all day Monday watching the Slack Stock Competition (rodeo primaries for the overflow of contestants) and was able to ask Donny Osmond for his autograph. "His wife is really pretty," she informed me. The main rodeo events began at 8 p.m. Tuesday with introductions of Rodeo Queen Jenny Lynn Page and attendants Cheryl and KayLynn Woolstenhume. Aside from looking fine, the girls skillfully herded the small stock out of the ring MEN'S GOLF Low Gross 1. JimDalton .38 George Dawson 38 2. Allan Jones 40 John Perkins 40 Low Net 1. Clegg Rodeos supplied the stock with Ken and Dutch Woolstenhume riding pickup. Their experienced teamwork in rescuing cowboys, handling the broncos and clearing the bulls from the ring added to the entertainment and contributed to a remarkable safe evening. Debby Wilde won ladies barrel racing and Deloy Bisel won the bull riding event. Rodeo clowns Clint Downs and Jerry Hurst pretended to "horse around" while actually distracting the bulls from the riders on the ground. The Okawa Mounted Patrol, made up of shriners from all over the state, rode an intricate drill pattern between events. ' ' ' Announcer Val Levitt brought the rodeo to a close with a beautiful round of fireworks. Pop...ooo...Bam.. ahh...and slowly the traffic headed home as downtown Oakley returned to normal. The Utah Board of Big Game Control has set dates and regulations -for Utah's 1978 big game seasons. Deer The general deer season, for bucks only, will be from October 21-31. There will be a trophy buck hunt, on the same dates, in the South Book Cliffs (unit 28B), the Henry Mountains (unit 52) and part of the Wellsville area (unit 4). Deer Control Seasons Control permits will authorize the permittee to take one deer in addition to the buck deer taken on the regular license or on a primitive weapons permit. All deer taken on control permits must be properly r tagged with the control permit tag and must be accompanied at all times by the permit card. It will be unlawful for a person to take more than two deer in Utah during the 1978 season. Cost of permits is $5 for residents and $7 for nonresidents. This fee will not be accepted at the time application is made. Applications will be accepted at the Salt Lake Office of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources by mail or in person until 5:00 p.m., September 15, 1978, for all control permits except 5-day notice. If needed, a public drawing to select successful applicants will be held September 22, 1978. Application deadlines for 5-day 5-day notice hunts will be announced at the time these hunts are called. Several areas will be open for the taking of one antlerless deer on a control permit during the season, October 21-31. There will be a hunter's choice control permit season from November 4-12 in the LaSal-Dolores area (herd unit 30B). In addition, a number of permits for antlerless deer will be issued on a 5-day notice control basis after the general season. Permits will be issued in the Crawford Mountains (herd unit 5), Lucerne Valley (unit 25) and Diamond Mountain (unit 26). Deer Archery The entire state is open to archery permittees for the taking with archery equipment of one buck deer during the season of August 19-September 4, 1978. An archery permittee who does not harvest a deer during the archery season may hunt during the regular season. Permits may be purchased by mailed or personal application at any DWR office, or from authorized license agents upon personal application only. Sale of permits will begin July 31 and continue through the archery season. Cost of archery permits is $5 for both residents and nonresidents. Deer Muzzleloader The entire state is also open to muzzleloader permittees for the taking with a muzzleloader of one buck deer during the season of November 4-8, 1978. Permits may be purchased by mailed or personal application at any DWR office. Sale of permits will begin September 25, 1978, and continue through 5:00 p.m., October 20, 1978. Cost of muzzleloader permits is $5 for residents and $7 for nonresidents. Elk A season of fourteen days, from October 4-17, has been set for the open bull season. Permits may be purchased in person or by mailed application August 7-25, 1978, at any DWR office. The cost of permits is $15, and must accompany the application. All persons desiring to hunt elk must first acquire an open bull permit. m s & & m m & a m s & $ m u 5? n i $ a tilr.yi j si J. nn.A-Crah StuffeCJomato 'Bonanza, Peasant Truit Scat, ' Ctiuct Nu Noodles Japanese Casserole J, Crab Salad Sandwich, lM Wel-Sat. 72.00- 2:30 Outdoor Patio TXmng party Reservations 'Accepted 628 Main 649-7091 is MAEDEL'S Sales and Service BODY SHOP Glass Work Kiiby Rd.
