Within this rich silver-Dear'mg silver-Dear'mg area various mining companies and entrepeneurs came into prominence, both on the state and national levels. Martin McGrath and W H. Dodge located the Silver King mine in 1889. A large outcropping of lead-silver ore was discovered in a nearby mine, the Mayflower, whose lease was eventually taken up by David Keith. WW. Rice, Thomas Kearns, A.B. Emery, and John Judge (key Utah mining magnates). Upon discovery that the vein ran into the Silver King property, they promptly, and it is said quietly, leased King property, then promptly, and it is said quietly, leased the latter claim. The five men purchased the mine in 1892 and incorporated the Silver King Mining Company with a stock valued at $3,000,000 150,000 shares at $20 per share. "Despite the slow beginning of the venture, due to the financial crises of the 1890s, the Silver King Mine was developed into one pi the richest mines acquired additional properties, many new, which, helps to explain their survival during that period of economic downturns. By 1904 the total claims of the company numbered eighty. "The Silver King Mine had an impressive surface plant (ore house and ball mill, hoisting works, carpenter and machine shops, assay office, and boarding houses). In 900-1901 900-1901 the company added to its mine structures by the construction con-struction of a 250:ton automatic sampler and aerial wire rope tramway. Located about one mjle and a quarter south of Park City, the mine had Us ore transported by wagon to the Mcintosh Sampler in lower Park City. The road was costly and difficult to keep under repair and open during winter months. Consequently, a rope tram system was believed to be the simplest and most economical way for haulage of the mine's large output of ore. "J. The tram line was some 7,000 feet in length, with a fall of 1,000 feet; and was comprised of a Finlayson Patent Automatic Wire Rope type considered among the best double rope tramway systems at the time and distributed by the Mine and Smelter Supply Co., Denver, with a branch in Salt Lake City). There were 80 buckets on the line spaced 175 feet apart, and each had a capacity of 500 pounds of ore and 325 pounds of coal. A distinctive feature of the line was the use of steel towers to support the ropes. These were manufactured hy the Gillette-Herzog Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and varied in height from 16 to 65 feet, the highest being near the lower terminal. "The Silver King Ore Loading Station, in lower Park City, was the lower terminal for the tram; which entered the station at a height of 85 feet. J.W. Stevens was the chief of construction on the structure, with Neil Bonner, foreman of the stonemasons and stonecutters. The automatic unloading device, and thsfioal and supply-loading apparatus (to haul these items' Up to the mine) were located on upper fourth) floor, as well as the bujlwheel around which turned the wire rope. Of engineering significance was the fact that the tramway tram-way originally operated by simple gravity, the weight of the ore cars 4scnding from the mine would supply enough power or momentum to carry, them back up loaded with coal and ether needed supplies. A stam engine may have taken over when the mechanism did not run itself . "Upon entrance into the lower terminal, the ore would be dumped into hoppers and bins. From, these containers it would then be loaded ia train ears (and weighed) on either side of the structure. A eoal loading device was also located in the building which utilized bucket elevators (now gone) to raise the -coal to the upper level where it was dumped through a chute into the empty ore buckets and transported to the mine. -'" "Such a system represented significant strides in transpor-tation transpor-tation and engineering within the mining industry. The lower terminal station functioned as a critical part of the Silver King Mine's overall operation, and its proximity to the Union Pacific Depot greatly facilitated the transportation of ore and materials to and from the Park City mine. "The Silver King Ore Loading Station today stands as the symbol of Park City, a thriving recreational community. Park City's ski . industry especially attracts thousands of visitors annually and the terminal stands at a central location, commanding a high visibility. In addition, the structure struc-ture was also included in the Historic American Engineering Record survey. Encircled by a chain link fence, the four story structure has deteriorated, but its rehabilitation figures prominently in a prospective adaptive use project. Structurally, the building is sound, although some doors Constructed of floor material) have been damanged, and most glass panes in the numerous six, over six wood sash windows have been broken. "Vertical siding was placed. over a heavy-timbered structural struc-tural frame, and remains intact. The tramway discharge terminal, jcomprised of the bullwheel, which was the turning mechanism for the wire pope, also remains. Ore and coal bins and chutes, are -evident, but have been closed or covered to prevent accidents... A platform was added at an unknown' date) toelow the ore bucket entry doors; as well as the addition ad-dition of a dormer on the roof on the west section. ' "The interior remains much intact; however, the track under un-der the ore bins, at the lower level on the east and west ends, has been removed. The steel towers remain both in the exterior ex-terior and interior features that exist, enough remains to visually illustrate the process and techniques (discussed in Item 8) used in the operation of the tram system."
