Show r Wednesday, February 15, 1978 Page 13 MT!CE By Patricia K. Smith It was the spread of industry that formed the whole order of society from the beginning years of the United States. Historians of economics, technology, and culture learn from industrial sites and are able to interpret past methods, production, working conditions, daily life, social patterns and economic organization. ' "Industrial monuments" (understood to refer primarily to , fixed-in-place buildings, earthworks, and machinery, or their remains) are to be explored, measured, recorded, and above all, placed in a historical setting. We are reappraising the mills, factories, terminals, workers housing, and other structures that earlier generations looked at but, in a sense never saw. We are learning to see them now and find in them a whole new subject for appreciation and research. It is clear that industrial sites, old and recent, are essential parts of American history. For all that can be learned from them, they need to be recorded, analyzed, and preserved as carefully as the ancient townsites, artworks, and cathedrals of more traditional archeology." (from "Industrial Archeology," Ar-cheology," by Theodore Anton Sande) The Silver King Coalition Mine Aerial Tramway and Ore Loading Station is a major industrial site in Utah and the West. Its significance is great visually and functionally as an example of careful engineering and design. The Historic American Engineering Record tells us : "At the beginning of the twentieth century the Silver King Coalition Mine in Park City, Utah, was both the largest Hi Tropical Fish Lizards 'Critters" Pet Supplies and Special Orders 649-903 1 357 Main St. Everything you need for pets l producer of ore and ore-concentrates in the region and the largest dividend payer in the state. The Silver King was widely acclaimed as the most complete and efficient in the district. "One major problem encountered by the Silver King was the transportation of its rich ore and concentrates to the tracks of the Rio Grande and Union Pacific Railroads in Park City. The road from the mine and mill to the railroad was steep and winding: heavy winter snows and spring rains often of-ten made it impassable. The solution to this problem was an aerial wire-rope tramway connecting the workings of the mine and mill with an ore loading station or tipple on the Park City railhead. "Such aerial tramways were nothing new to Park City, or to Utah, but the Silver King does serve as an example of this type of ore transport system and of the level of automation achieved in early twentieth century mining facilities." For this reason, the Silver King Coalition Ore loading station has been documented for the Utah State Historic Sites Survey. UTAH STATE HISTORIC SITES SURVEY DOCUMENTS COALITION The Utah State Historic Sites Survey is underway now in Park City. Phillip Notariani, State Historic Preservation Officer, Of-ficer, is working to document selected buildings with photography, capsulated historical and architectural analysis, and maps showing contributory landmarks for future reference. These records are filed at the State Preservation Preser-vation Offices and copies are given to the city so that all records are available for public use and reproduction. The maps, which document the location of historically important sites, are used to aid environmental review on future public works projects involving federal funds as well as providing a housing inventory for reference in applying for federal grants gran-ts such as H.U.D. Mr. Notariani has been documenting buildings in Park City since early fall of '77. In order for a building to be included on the States Register of Historic sites, certain criteria must be met. The State Register criteria is similar to the National but less restrictive. A structure or area should have outstanding historical and cultural significance in the state, region, or communic-in communic-in which it exists. Such significance is founded in : (A) historic structures or sites in which the broad " , cultural, political, economic, or social history of the state or community is best exemplified, and from which the visitor may grasp in three dimensional form one of the larger patterns of our heritage ; or (B) structures or areas that are identified with the lives of historic personages or important events in the main currents of state or local history ; or (C) structures or areas that embody the distinguishing characteristics of an architectural type specimen, inherently inheren-tly valuable for a study of a period style or method of construction, con-struction, or a notable work of a master builder, designer or architect whose individual genius influenced his age. The Silver King Coalition Ore Loading Station passed review by the Utah Historic and Cultural Sites Committee February 1, 1978 and was nominated to the National Register of Historic Places. The National Register of Historic Places is a list maintained main-tained by the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, of buildings, sites, objects, and districts important in American history, architecture, archeology and culture. It was expanded under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 to include properties of local and statewide significance, significan-ce, as well as those of national importance. Properties listed in the National Register are afforded a degree of protection by a procedure of the Federal Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, which reviews and comments com-ments on proposals involving federal funds or licenses that may threaten or encroach upon National Register Properties. Proper-ties. Listed properties may also be eligible for matching funds fun-ds for preservation work.
