Show Wednesday, February 1, 1978 UTAH WILPERNESS If the San Rafael Swell was a National Park, it would be one of our fi nest . I ts colorful thousand-foot cliffs, narrow and deep river canyons and spectacular vistas create what is undoubtedly un-doubtedly our largest unprotected un-protected scenic resource. Roughly twice the size of Utah's largest National Park,, Canyonlands, the San Rafael Swell can be divided into three general areas. On the north, the Sids Mountain-Mexican Mountain-Mexican Mountain proposed wilderness is an area of thousand-foot cliffs of the crimson Windgate and Navajo Sandstones. In- . eluded is the San Rafael River and its primitive canyons. The tortured, uplifted rocks of the San Rafael Reef form the eastern boundary. Here is a rugged wilderness of sculptured rock and deep, narrow canyons. Eleanor Bennett Leads Women's Athenaeum Eleanor Bennett doesn't join anything half-heartedly. As a United States citizen, she flies a flag over her home, the Owl's Roost, daily and, as a member of the Women's Athenaeum, she holds three offices on local and state levels of the Utah Federation of Women's Clubs. And Miss Bennett plans to take part in the national elections of the General Federation of Women's Clubs to be held in Phoenix this June. The Women's Athenaeum was founded in 1897 as a study club and has been a constant source of community com-munity service since that time. The 23 Park City members comprise one of seventy clubs ranging from 10 to 300 members in the, WEEKDAY VIEWING 5 Farm News 5 Sunrise Semester 2 Early Farm Watch 2 Music Shop 4 Good Morning America 5 CBS News 2 New Mickey Mouse Club 2 Today 4 Hotel Balderdash 5 Captain Kangaroo 4 Good Morning America 5 Romper Room 5 Price is Right 7 Figuring It Out 2 Wheel of Fortune 4 Happy Days 7 Electric Company 2 Knockout 4 Phil Donahue 7 Anyone for Tennyson? While scenery is the Swell's most conspicuous attraction, at-traction, wildlife constitutes an important and attractive part of the resource. Mule deer is the only big game species in the area, but there is a large variety of non-game non-game species. Included is the peregrine falcon, along with other raptor species of birds, such as golden eagles and a variety of hawks. Predators, such as coyotes, bobcats and an occasional cougar are also found. The region's two rivers, the Muddy and the San Rafael, are proposed (but not officially so) wild and scenic river candidates. The narrow, boulder-studded canyons, low water and several waterfalls preclude Utah Federation of Women's Clubs. The General Federation, whose motto is "Unity in Diversity," spans 45 countries and territories. "The possibilities are endless en-dless for a federated club," says Eleanor Bennett. "Thousands of dollars are awarded to local clubs each year to further community services." The Park City Library has been a special Woman's Atheneum project for several years. Librarians Violet Terry and Margaret Angeli are both Athenaeum members. Local members also have played an active role in the statewide project at Perception Park near Ogden. Care must be given to time of year and weather, however. The hiker will spend a good deal of time swimming the many plunge pools and there is one stretch in the Black Box of the San Rafael River where a half-mile half-mile swim is necessary. A waterproof pack with floatation device attached is suggested. Otherwise you may drown. It pays to keep an eye out for a change in the weather, especially in the late summer.
