Show Vednesday, February 1, 1978 Ostbye Wins At Snowbird Hy David Xeu Jean-Peter Ostbye once tain me man to beat in Duaine Brown Grand Prix !Ski racing by winning the cond race of the series an. 27 at Snowbird. Ostbye had performed oorly in the first race at olitude Jan. 7th, but his iird place finish in the elestial Team Pro race at spen Highlands, Jan. 21, nd his first place and most restigious pro victory in ew Mexico three days iter, sharpened him up for le victory on his home tour. The 17-hour drive from New Mexico didn't take the edge off the former Univeristy of Utah racer as he posted the fastest time early in the race, skiing by himself when former freestyle skier Marty Lofquist didn't snow up. Ostbye then out raced Bill Skinner and Bob Davis, the second and first place winners win-ners respectively at Solitude. "How can you beat him when he doesn't make any mistakes," said Davis immediately after his inten se pursuit of Ostbye down the three bump slalom set on the NASTAR run on Big Emma. Ostbye then staged an exciting race with Karl Jacobson in the semi-finals before holding off Rick Newton, also a former University of Utah racer, in the finals. In the consolation round, Jacobson outdualed Tom Reinerth for third place when Reinerth fell in the second run after establishing a slim lead in the first run. The race was a crowd pleaser partly due to the sunny skies and no wind. However, midway through the quarter, it was delayed due to an accident in which a Japanese photographer, Kimitada Koseki was run over by a snow tractor which was returning downhill after letting off some contestants. The photographer was airlifted airlif-ted to a Salt Lake hospital shortly after the accident with back and leg injuries but was reported Jan. 31 by a Snowbird official to be improving im-proving at a satisfactory rate. The Lift House again took top team honors with Jacob-son Jacob-son and Reinerth contributing con-tributing to their sponsor's current lead in the team standings. Ostbye and Newton skied unattached to any sponsor. The next race leading to the final Grand Prix prize of $5,000 will be held at Solitude Feb. 4 with qualifications the day before. The Snowbird event was sponsored by the Miller Brewing Company with Tilden Martin, Mar-tin, General Manager of Star Distributing Company of Salt Lake City presenting the trophy cup to Ostbye. The Solitude race will be sponsored spon-sored by the Hilton's of Salt Lake. Mike Sorenson, organizer of the Duaine Brown series said the first place prize at Solitude will be $300.
