Show t Page 14 by Tubular WeHs While farmers in Duchense County worry where their irrigation water will come from, Parkites have trouble taking this drought seriously. From the early days, underground springs have been the curse of Park City miners. The pumping has been continuous as water seeps into the shafts. California burns and the Pacific Northwest fails to receive her usual daily rains. I hear again the claim that we in Park City don't have to worry about the drought. I see houses and sidewalks being hosed down and sprinklers run at mid-day. "Oh, there's no drought here," the offenders say, a dangerous consciousness. It takes only a drive past Rockport to verify the bad state we are in. The lake is half its usual level and the sage is already turning brown. This week PBS presents a special on the Western drought. A panel of water experts, scientists and environmentalists discuss the long and short-term effects of this dry year. We on this mountain, though aware of the drastic economic consequences of this year's dry winter, need to become more aware of our carelessness. What if, forgive the thought, this drought continues. Is this a new weather cycle or just a freak year? Tune to PBS Wednesday night to find out what the scientists predict. Wednesday August 10, 9:00 Special: "The Western Drought".
