Show Page 2 Wednesday, April 14, 1976 How About It ? NecDspapeR Talk You WILL Register Coming before the city council at Thursday's meeting will be a proposed ordinance "requiring entertainers and persons employed as dispensers dispen-sers of alcoholic beverages to register with the police chief." It is a well-intentioned but ill-advised effort precipitated by a recent incident at the Mother Lode restaurant. During a police identification check of patrons it was discovered that the doorman inspecting I.D.s was underage. The doorman ' had represented himself to the proprietor as being 21 years old and provided false identification to substantiate his claim. The police department is obviously attempting to prevent such occurrences in the future through the issuance of their own picture identification cards. But when read through completely, the ordinance resembles a cannon firing at a mosquito. Not only would bartenders, barmaids and I.D. checkers be required to obtain ob-tain registration cards but also "all professional dancing girls, all female impersonators (no kidding) and all other professional entertainers." en-tertainers." In addition, "Police registration cards shall not be issued to any person who has been convicted con-victed of a felony, or any other crime or crimes, which at the Police Chief's discretion, may be considered injurious" to the businesses falling under the ordinance. The many tentacled law would even require registration of persons working in places not serving alcohol if such a business "does employ dancing girls, female impersonators or other professional entertainers" and "is completely or partially owned by an establishment or persons which does dispense alcoholic beverages." Taken in whole or in part, the proposed ordinance or-dinance is incongruous .with post-Nixon America. A bar offering live music would have to insure that each band member pays his $2 registration fas, provide! tw&l14fJirici pictures and receives... his card before setting foot on stage even if the group is appearing for only one night. And what about last minute replacements? No tickee, no tunee. When one considers the employe turnover rate experienced by most Park City businesses, it's not hard to imagine a constant flow of. registrants streaming into police headquarters with pictures in hand. Polaroid stock would soar but an already overtaxed police force would be bogged down even more. The special attention given to female impersonators im-personators is puzzling, to say the least. If there has been an influx of the what-you-see-is-rot-what-you-get crowd we're sure the local disco romeos would have registered their complaints by now. And if an employer wants to hire someone who has been convicted of a crime,' why should the -police chief be able to prevent this? If an ex-convict-is denied the right to gainful employment, em-ployment, his alternative is painfully clear. He reverts to his former ways and soon has the "ex" removed. , And what if lost cards become a problem? Can tattoos be far behind? It's not the feeling here that the police have intentionally set out to infringe on the rights of the employes and businessmen, we think they simply failed to study in detail the moral and logistical ramifications of the law. If it's by the book, the book was authored by Orwell or Huxley. We urge rejection of the ordinance. The scope of the problem is'minimal and it certainly does not warrant Big Brotherism in ary form or to any degree. ; J. IN? - Ail' Have you had enough skiing for this season or are you hoping for more snow? , t Skip Schirf I've skied three times this year so my season is over. If it snows again I'll be highly disillusioned. Skip Schirf BMOrwIg 'ff Martens Ligare Randy Thompson I'd like to finish out "the month of April. It would be nice if we had good snow for Easter and the Ski Team's Celebrity Fund Raiser. After that I don't care. - Bill Orwig Always more snow, we have to have snow all year round. I think it would be perfect if we could have red, white and blue snow.- Mike Rendich , No more snow. The ski season is long enough as it is and the summer season is too short. Marlene Ligare I haven't done much skiing this year because my heart just hasn't been into it. I guess I'm finally getting it out of my system. Mary Sturges I am definitely not hoping for more snow. Along with everyone else, I'm looking forward to the warm weather now that we've had a taste of it. It isn't that I've had enough skiing it's just that I'm anxious for summer.
