THE C'EST CON LOUMGE I rarely write a column in the first person, since the third person is supposedly more objective, ob-jective, but I have a few personal observations to get off my head, and don't want anyone to think that I'm trying to be totally objective. First is a blast at a film . Taxie Driver is worse than any unspeakable abomination produced in super 8 simply because Martin Scorsese, who directed Alice Doesn't live here Anymore, is a professional who should know how to make a film. Could Alice have been a fluke? Scorsese seems to show none of the flair of his previous efforts in Taxi Driver. The film is a disman (probably on purpose), humorless (unless you like laughing at Cybil Sheperd), violent (ultra violent), copout (fairy tales can come true, it can happen to you). Nothing worked in the film. I've heard that Robert De Niro has gotten rave reviews for his part in the flick. From who, and where did they see the movie? De Niros acting is as Unfocused as the rlirertinff His rrtlo nails far , ihim to be a lonely psychotic; but De Niro has very little feel for desperation. Of course De Niro 1 1 .a ! luuKs gooa compared 10 some ot tne otner clowns 10 I in tho film Knf nnA nnH Sc. ... n.v linn, uui guu aiing ta uui a i ciauvc a laic. But what really bothers me abour this film is the violence followed bV a copout ending . The film has some of the most violent scenes ever put on celluloid. I am ont opposed to seeing violence . when it is essential to the purpose of the film, but when violence serves only to titillate, I fjnd the movie far more pornographic than any XXX film shown at the adult theaters. . Taxi Driver's main message seems to be if you are lonely and forgotten, kill a pimp (totally mutilate would be closer) and you will be a hero. I don't think that's very realistic. That type of logic carried a step further could justify a Jack Ruby or Sirhan Sirhari. Has anyone seen this film and enioved. or even found a valid excuse for, the flick? I'd like to hear your opinion. Otherwise, I feel I've already given too much attention to this disaster. Second, I've almost succeeded in ignoring the Acadamy Awards this year. I liked Cuckoo's Nest and Milos Forman, but I can't help but feel that Jack Nicholson (like so many fine actors cellence in past years. (The Last Detail, 'and China Town immediatly spring to mind) Ah, but what does it matter? Finally, I went to see the final film of the American Dream film festival. Although Hearts and Minds is not a joyous flick to see, it was pleasurable to see a well-directed documentary. Critics who have said that the film is hiaspH against the U.S. role in Vietnam are in many ways correct; However, the film is a fitting end to The American Dream festival simply because it shows how little America knew about Nam. We went into the war with a dream and came out of it with a nightmare. The film does chronicle how poorly our government (hence the people, if one believes our democratic ideals) behaved, and shows the lies and self-deception we practiced. I guess it is difficult for the country to look at many of its sacred cows being axed before its eyes, but it is a film than every American should see at least once. It would be even more difficult for this country to survive another Vietnam. As for the festival, I hope the success of The American Dream spawns a second festival with as many fine films as the first. 1 it: Cias tamra SS5c oqw (fee rita va r ill rr r . - . itthi KV 530 - kX0,,daie of FONDUE lOiSO |
