Shanghai Jimmy is the creator of a concoction called Chili Rice which, with a dash of Shanghai Jimmy's hot sauce, can do serious damage to a cast iron stomach.: stom-ach.: - The 74-year-old Shanghai Shang-hai Jimmy had a restaurant -if you want you could call his Chili Rice Parlor a restaurant- in Dallas in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It was in downtown Dallas and was a popular spot for the bankers, lawyers and other executives in the area, but was considered a special place for newspaper people. Music Notes SportSwriters, notorious for mistreating their digestive systems, were particular fans of Shanghai Jimmy. Shanghai Jimmy enjoyed local fame and his Chili Rice was becoming a way of life for many people. But Shanghai Shang-hai Jimmy .had a dream which reached beyond his pots and pans. He wanted to run an ice rink. So, when he thought he had saved enough money, he closed the chili rice parlor and opened his ice rink. Ice skating was just not as popular popu-lar as chili rice. So Shanghai , Jimmy, whose real name is Joe James, closed up shop and roamed around the country. Both the nickname and the chili rice are products of Joe James' years in China. At various times he ran a radio station, a nightclub and a restaurant in Shanghai. Shang-hai. It was while operating the restaurant he came tip with Chili Rice. "I was making chili and serving it with red beans," he, recalled. "The ; beans weren't easy to get, but there was plenty of rice. People in Shanghai,, foreigners, and I don't mean the Chinese, seemed to like the rice better than the beans. Naturally the Chinese liked it better with rice." Thus Chili Rice was born. That was in the early 1930s. Joe James was, still in Shanghai when the Japanese Japa-nese invasion ' came. He spent 2xh years as a' prison- er of , war. After the war he went back into business in Shanghai with a nightclub. The Red Chinese didn't care much '! for Americans running run-ning nightclubs in Shanghai in 1948 even if the American was the inventor of Chili Rice. So Joe James came back to the states and, in 1950, Shanghai Jimmy opened a hot dog stand in the East Texas town of Tyler. In 1953 he moved to Dallas. Dal-las. Success came and brought with it some fame : ' and . some fortune, but not enough to sustain an ice rink. "After the ice rink closed, -I went to the West Coast to visit old Shanghai friends. Then I'd go to Minnesota-1 was born up there to visit family. Once in awhile I'd go through Dallas. People : were always asking when I- ' was going to open up again," he said. " - So in the fall of 1975, Shanghai Jimmy reopened in Dallas. "In the first ; month some of my old cus- . tomers had been back ; 15 times," he said. ; . Business is good so Shanghai Shang-hai Jimmy is developing a new dream for his future.' ; ' ."I'm thinking about open-" ing other places, you know a franchise operation. But I'm . not out to peddle the name. I would have real quality . control," he said. ; ' But old dreams do not die easy. "Weekdays I open at 1 1, but on Sunday I don't open until 5. We stay open until 0 . every night. You f can catch me here almost anytime. any-time. A maturing , musician, who grew up being bounced on the legendary knees of Leadbell, Sonny Terry, Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Pete Seeger, Arlo seems to have little time or inclination in-clination to imitate the past. This, he and ' his backup group, Shenandoah, ' demonstrated to an appreciative ap-preciative full house at the Capitol Theatre in Salt Lake City Monday night. The concert was a very satisfying wrap-up to a locally produced musical double-header, the first half being Doc and Merle Watson, who wowed 1500 picking fans at the Terrace, Jan 23. Gale Hendry and his Children in Time production company have been putting together very well organized shows in the Salt Lake City area tho last few years, featuring mostly, local folk musicians. Doc Atson and Arlo Guthrie marked their initial venture involving "name" talent and these two successful outings, hopefully, will give them the confidence to continue. . Arlo, keeping mostly to tunes he - has .. recorded, opened on the piano with "Stealing," the Gus Cannon Jug Band classic. He tnen grabbed a Gibson electric guitar, and, with the band, rock-and-rolled through "Gypsy Davy," a song penned by Woody that enjoyed en-joyed a long run on the Alamo juke-box. If he didn't own the crowd now, he was to shortly. Asking the folks handling the lighting chores to provide some moonlight, Arlo and Shenandoah laid down a beautiful four-part harmony to "Ukulele Lady" and promptly brought down the house. "Victor Jara," a song concerning the death of a Chilean activist-poet at the hands of Chile's current military regime, followed. Adrian Mitchell, an English poet who knew Jara, wrote the lyrics in poem form, with Arlo later supplying the music. This poignant, sensitive sen-sitive tune inaugurated the political part of the show. With ramblin parables and much innuendo concerning the CIA and FBI and the corruption of power, Arlo dedicated "presidential Rag" to the song's chief antagonist, Richard M. Nixon. Utilizing short anecdotes to intro many of his tunes, Arlo next showed up in a Chicago bar with some local singer playing him his latest tune. The crowd could sense it cominf: Steve Goodman's great "City of New Orleans." a song which helped Arlo's mortgage problems considerably con-siderably a couple of years back. Out came the 5-string banjo with the breakdown "Washington County" being followed by a , bluegrass version of the Beatles "Falling," which Arlo announced an-nounced as "here's an old folk song for you." He then introduced individually, stage to them for approximately ap-proximately the next half hour. Arlo was hardly missed at all as this obviously talented group mixed original and traditional material. "You can all dribble along with this one if you'd like," led into an and Blue almost frantic Georgia Brown." Try imagine an articulate Cheer. From the mighty tasty : "Folk Song Singer in a Rock ) and Roll Band," to the ' hilarious rock-gospel "Jesus ' is Easy," Shenandoah ' demonstrated strong vocal ; and musical arrangements. The showcase of their portion I of the show, however, had to ; be their four-part harmony a capella treatment of ' "Because All Men are Brothers," a patriotic parody with music by Bach and! lyrics added sometime later. : before the evening was over. "Motorcycle Song" from his first LP and still one of his most requested tunes, followed; this version explaining ex-plaining the significance of the "pickle." "Me and My Goose" with Arlo at the piano preceeded "Massachusetts" a tribute to his home state, the only one, he noted, "not to vote for Richard Nixon" in the '72 election. With Arlo again on guitar and the band back on stage, Dylan's "Percy's Song" and Hoyt Axton's witty tribute to the country-cop, "Speed Trap" ensued. This gave way to a sing-along New England whaling ditty entitled "Rueben Ramzo." Since recognition is the prime . motivating factor at any concert, it was not surprising sur-prising when "Coming in to Los Angeles" garnered the evenings biggest response. '. The song, which concerns the Shenandoah' smuggling of marijuana and leaving the contains the lyric "Don't i touch my bag if you please Mr. Customs man," main-; main-; tained a sense of irony as at times there seemed to be at v least one police officer for every three concertgoers. -; This ended the regular show and set up a very unique ' three-song encore, one which "Sweet . displayed Arlo's awareness of the tempo of the times: "You Ain't Going Nowhere," a surprisingly . straight version of "Oakie From Muskogee," and "This Land is Your Land," the latter containing some original verses which didn't seem to make it into the school books. Music written by Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard and .Woody Guthrie. Lord have mercy. Not a John Denver tune in the bunch. - ; coming .back for his second encore and realizing this crazy crowd might just "It is a bad nomination and one I will vote against when it comes before the full Senate," U.S. Senator Jake Garn (R-Ut) said last week in commenting on President Ford's choice of W.J. Usery to be Secretary of Labor. The nomination was approved yesterday by , the Labor Committee bya 13-1 margin. Zl don't doubt Mr. Usery's 3&"l4i (-Senator said, , "but I do seriously doubt his ability to be objective, I think he has proven over and over again that he is totally pro-labor. pro-labor. He has been a union official and in his role as Federal Mediator has shown a strong pro-labor bias. We should not have a Secretary of Labor who is biased toward either labor or management but one who is objective andd will act fairly in balancing the needs and desires of both sides of labor-management issues. .. "He has made statements that people who want right to , work laws are 'crazy', and 'bigots.' Utah happens to be a right to work state find is so because that's the way the State Legislature and the people of Utah want it. I ' hardly think they're crazy or bigoted and definitely feel Utahns, or residents of any other right to work state, . should not be branded by a Secretary of Labor. "Usery has also called for collective bargaining and binding arbitration in the public sector, philosophies I violently oppose. In fact, he did so just a year ago in Salt Lake City. "It is plain to see where his bias is; it lies with labor. He wants to do away with the -right of free choice through , compulsory unionism and I will not vote for a Secretary of Labor with that philosophy." Hollywood has produced a great number of abominations and a lesser number of works of art. But its greatest product seems to be mediocrity.' Most movies are technically well constructed, decently acted, nicely shot turkeys. One must almost feel sorry for the superstars who lent their names to this film. For example, the second scene is a song and dance number featuring Liza Minnelli that mainly tends to show how badly Caberet could have been had the director been some average Joe. Minnelli has been handled so much better in previous films that her brief singing scenes in Lucky Lady almost make her look bad. Both Gene Hackman and Burt Reynolds are spared that type of comparison, but neither of these actors could count their performances as high points in their careers. Why is Lucky Lady such a mediocre film? Chances are that it was planned that way. The characters are supposed to start off desperate, but they just seem cute. (We can't have the characters too grimy, they won't be loveable enough). The plot has : the normal villians,' (gangsters!) and the ending is a typical Hollywood shoot'em up! (makes Pearl Harbor look like a weenie roast)! The director of the film, Stanley Donen, almost turned the film into a bomb by his annoying use of soft focus at very odd times. One wonders if wic vaiucia uscu was a iiuii icuca type ouu uiey didn't notice till the 3rd day of shooting that the lens was smudged. Unfortunately, Donen did not direct the film so badly that it became good. Lucky Lady's direction was just average, although occasionally sloppy. r Who hasn't seen a film that was so bad it was hilarious. Lucky Lady was not that type of film. bucxy L.aay was an entertaining mm. Sometimes a critic almost chokes on those words..
