It will be my first, but from what I hear, past parties have been a blast with booze, live music and the most interesting people in town all assembled in the Main Gallery. This is a time when members can personally present input to Bill Kimball, who will be here, to staff members and the board of directors. Because we appreciate all the input we can get, please come. My first five months in Park City with the Kimball Art Center have been enormously rewarding. I didn't expect to be disappointed, but the scope of activity that takes place in the center makes it a particularly stimulating stimulat-ing experience. The varied selection of classes and workshops we offer, the opportunities to expose local artists to what others in the world are doing, cultural events in music, dance and theatre, the Park City Art Festival we sponsor, and our craftshop that showcases work from regional craftsmenall crafts-menall of these functions fostered by KAC make me proud to be a part of it. When I accepted the position as director of KAC, a clearly-defined challenge was part of the action. It's a bit like a marriage. You don't just accept the fun of creative involvement. You have to accept the whole package. The dark side of the job was its financial situation. The Kimball Art Center is in dire need of funds. If things aren't turned around, there is no conceivable way we can continue to exist. There are those who like to say that this isn't so, but I'm here to tell you that it is and nobody, other than Marilyn Modling, our bookkeeper, is in a better position to know. Having to be dependent upon contributions for basic operating funds, which average $21,000 each and every month, does not give me the sense of security I'm accustomed to especially when so many of our former supporters are operating with negative cash flows. I'm a product of the old school that believes we should pay our own way. By "we" I mean not only the staff, but also the community and its visitors who enjoy the privilege of having this marvelous facility available. It is my belief that a certain amount of community funds should be distributed to proven organizations such as KAC that give this community its enviable position among competing resorts. Then private donations from interested supporters could be budgeted for improvements, rather than basic operating funds. For instance, we would like to sponsor occasional traveling exhibitions featuring great art collections from around the world. These cost money. We would like to sponsor a Utah Symphony program in the summer. This costs money. We would like to enclose our patio to provide a multi-purpose area for community functions and performances. Money, again. But most of all, we would like to install a workable kitchen in the Kimball Art Center. It is unheard of that a facility of this dimension should lack a kitchen. Being without one limits possibilities for luncheon and dinner programs and classes in creative cooking which could contribute to our opportunities for earning our own way. An additional demand upon funds is the frightening prospect of recarpeting and painting this huge building, which will be necessary in a year or two. We are kidding ourselves if we think our past large contributors will donate forever. New and deserving demands for their funds arise each year. I believe that nonprofit organizations in a position to collect revenue in fees, charges or admissions have an obligation to manage those revenue-producing areas in such a way that profits from them can achieve a break-even position by subsidizing non-revenue-producing areas, such as general maintenance and operating expenses. Good management is the only answer. We have the same obligation to our supporters to be cost-effective in operation as has a corporation to its stockholders. Organizations such as KAC do not become basically self-supporting overnight, however. We have survived five years of growing pains with the help of a handful of loyal supporters. There is still a way to go, but at last we are realizing progress. Peggy Black has increased in-creased memberships more than two fold during the four months she has been in charge of this department. With discrimination discrimina-tion in selection of merchandise and by improving display areas, Karen Offringa has shown a tremendous gain in revenue from our craftsmanship. The new lower-level gallery gal-lery with its varied exhibits has proven enormously popular. By conscientiously jurying prospective artists, we expect to improve upon the quality and interest of future Main Gallery shows. Carol Calder has successfully obtained sponsors for these shows, which helps to reduce expenses formerly charged to general operating. Further, Barbara Stiles' expert management manage-ment in the building operation has improved its appearance as well as reduce maintenance main-tenance costs. Alan Seko's development of an educational workshop program in conjunction conjunc-tion with the University of Utah is introducing more learning opportunities than we have provided in the past, and I predict that Sean Toomey's exceptionally strong management of the Park City Art Festival will make this the most successful one in KAC history. The ink on our issues isn't even dry before Scott calls in with the correct answers. Last Thursday, as usual, our secretary barely had time to swig down her morning java before Scott notified her that "Gator" was the Burt Reynolds movie where Jerry Reed played a villain; that the Beatles' dead manager was Brian Epstein; and that Bonnie Bedford was marrying Pete Park on Aug. 28.
