Show Thursday, February 15, 1979 Page 3 R esort To Crack Down f On Ski Speeders Continued From Jones noted that in Drevious vears. a skier going down a mogul run out of control would either bail out before he was really in trouble, or would be bounced off his feet and rollercoaster to a stop. "But when there are no moguls, you can put off the fall for a long time if you have no brains and a lot of balance." Jones said there have been some serious accidents this season. The most recent necessitated emergency service from the Life Flight helicopter to remove a skier who broke his femur, pelvis, and had head concussions concus-sions and abrasions from hitting a tree at high speed. "We're not saying don't ski fast or buy long skis," Jones said. "We're saying cool your jets a little and keep your eyes open." In addition to the increase in accidents, Jones commented that there has been an increase in the number of complaints from skiers sideswiped by speed demons. That higher incidence of reckless skiing has resulted in the elimination of Happy Hour at the Mid Mountain Lodge, a pasttime especially popular among locals. "I guess the last few instances were the straw that broke the camel's back," Jones said. "It's hard to defend the encouragement of drinking at half price and then sending skiers down at the most crowded time of the day. When you look at it from a ski safety aspect, it doesn't make sense. This is a big mountain when you go up, but when you come down, everyone funnels into a few runs. The Hollow is in the shadows at the end of the day and is already a disaster with the crowds. You add young people who are good skiers who have had a few beers and it becomes a race. We're not going to ban beer sales, we just can't promote half price drinking at the end of the day." Doug Hollingsworth, owner of the Mid Mountain Lodge service, said although he hates to see a good thing come to an end, he understands the resort's position. "We understand the need for it that it's for the overall safety of the skiers," Hollingsworth said. "The Happy Hour was good PR for the Mid Mountain Lodge. It was a very enjoyable local thing. We didn't want to see this happen, but it was coming." The resort plans to deal with reckless, speeding skiers by placing signs on lift towers to remind them to slow down, and will have ski patrolmen verbally reminding them four hours each weekend day on the more congested runs. Skiers determined deter-mined by the patrolmen to be a hazard to others will be given a warning and the corner of their pass ripped off for identification. Repeat offenders will lose their pass Mountain Manager Phil Jones "If it's a good, steep advanced run with no one on it, you won't be bothered," Jones said. "But if you'fe speeding down Claimjumper or Pay Day or runs where there are not a lot of good skiers, we're going to get you For every 100 skiers, there's one or two jerks. I've seen 'em coming off King Con and getting air by the Prospector lift. That's an IQ test. They end up sliding into the lift lines, the ski school classes and the Snow Hut restaurant." Further illuminating ski safety precautions, Jones noted that 60 percent of the accident injuries are cuts, the majority of which are caused by windmilling skis a direct result of safety straps. The mountain manager noted that the Park City ski area is in favor of replacing safety straps with ski brakes so that a person who has fallen can get away from his skis rather than be struck with them as they both bounce down a run. ' fi "The point is, we are in the people business," Jones said. "We're trying to have a nice safe place to ski for both the season pass holders and this visitors. !l "We're not trying to hassle anyone or stop them from having fun," Jone,s emphasized. "We're trying to make people aware of the problem areas so they can help make this an even better place to ski." R K S I A U K A N I Serving Breakfast Daily!
