Show Wednesday, March 9, 1977 Superintendent Says No To Elwell Contract Page 11 Continued From Page I the superintendent would recommend that the principal not be rehired for the 1977-78 school year. THe two then had 30 days in which to settle their differences. At the end of that period Goodworth was required to reach a final judgement and he again recommended that Elwell contract not be renewed. Reportedly, Goodworth contends Elwell has failed to support decisions made by the board and superintendent and has opposed the board in their efforts to establish a middle school in the old high school. Earlier in the meeting. Dr. Mark Simmons, currently principal of Park City High School, was appointed as principal of the middle school. Coincidentally, on the same day as the board meeting, a complimentary article on Marsac and Elwell appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune. The article, written by Craig Hansell, cited an "innovative system of learning" at Marsac and noted Elwell's emphasis on "building both physical and mental self confidence." Landward To Head Consolidated Health Service Dr. Richard Goodworth I V- ENGINEERING I The Board of Commissioners Com-missioners last Wednesday, at their regular meeting, hired Dr. John Landward of Oakley to serve as director of a consolidated health services ser-vices department. Dr. Landward Lan-dward is presently the assistant director of the Salt Lake Mental Health Department Depar-tment where he has been employed since 1972. Landward will direct the soon to be established County Coun-ty Health Department and will oversee activities of the County Drug and Alcohol Abuse program, school health services, sanitation, mental health, and the hospital in Coalville. The Health Services Director will be responsible to a group of appointed citizens. It has not been decided whether to keep the existing drug and alcohol and the hospital boards separate or to combine com-bine them with a board of health to form a single health services governing board. This discussion will probably be made prior to April 1, when Landward is slated to accede to the new position. Landward was hired at an annual salary of $18,000 which is a sizeable reduction to his persent salary. Lan-. dward indicated that his willingness to accept the new position at a cut in salary stems fron a desire to make a contribution to the community com-munity in which he lives. "Frankly," said Landward, "i'm bored at my present job. The new position will be a challenge that I'm looking forward to." 'prior to joining the Salt Lake Mental Health Department, Depar-tment, Landward worked for the V.A. Hospital as a clinical psychologist. Commenting Comment-ing on Ms. Deffebach's work, Art Center Director Alan Crooks said, "Although I have followed Lee's career for several years, I was simply not prepared for her earlier exhibition of the, grouping she called the Alph series. Walking into the space was a mind-blower. Color screamed at me like a myriad of auroras in the Alaskan sky shifting, blending, awesome." As for Deffebach's new series of paintings which will be exhibited at the Kimball Art Center, Crooks anticipates that "whatever it turns out to be, we'll all know we are in the presence of perhaps the most exciting art and artist in Utah. Ms. Deffebach's work has appeared in such varied galleries as the Salt Lake Art Center, the Phillips Gallery, New York's Whitney Museum Mu-seum and Civic Center, the Henri Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia, the University of Nevada at Reno, and Weber College's "6 Outstanding Utah Artists" show.
