Park City, playing on its home field, was effective in bottling up the Mustang running attack but lapses in the defensive secondary cost them the game. The two Miner touchdowns came on a nifty 23-yard second quarter run by Jerry Johnson and a 22-yard option sprint by a quarterback Norm Sagona in the third quarter that gave Park City a temporary 12-6 advantage. Early Fumbles The Miners squandered two early opportunities to put Dugway in the hole. After taking the opening kickoff, the Mustangs fumbled fum-bled on the first play from scrimmage and the Miners recovered at the Dugway 28. But Park City was unable to move the ball and Dugway regained possession at its own 35. i The possession was shortlived, short-lived, however, as Dugway again coughed up the ball on first down and Park City had another golden scoring opportunity. op-portunity. The glitter disappeared dis-appeared rapidly. Proving fumbles can be infectious, a pitchout from Sagona to Rob Jones, just returned from the injured list, missed connections connec-tions and Dugway had the ball back at the 41-yard-line. Apparently charged by ' their misfortune-turned-good-fortune, the Mustangs drove to the Park City 23 on the strong running of Mike McCurdy. The offense sputtered, sput-tered, however, when it penetrated deep into Miner territory and the Mustangs had to settle for a field goal attempt. But the kick never got off as a bad snap sent McCurdy scurrying around in his own backfield. He was dropped at the 26 and the Miners had thwarted the Brett Much Quarterback Norm Sagona breaks loose for a Miner touchdown. ustang Passes To For first Dugway scoring threat. Miner Touchdown Dugway took the lead early in the second quarter. After being held to four yards in three plays, the Miners went into punt formation for-mation and Jerry Johnson sailed a wind-assisted kick all the way to the Dugway 23-yard-line. The Mustangs Mus-tangs fumbled the punt but managed to scrambled for a recovery as the first quarter ended. Dugway again went to McCurdy and the running back responded by providing two first downs. With the Mustangs facing a third-and-one situtation at the Miner 45, Park City bunched its defense in preparation pre-paration for an anticipated plunge. But the plunge never came. Instead, quarterback Eric VanLiere lobbed a pass to Greg Brown in the right flat and Brown raced all the way for a touchdown. The extra-point kick was no good but Dugway led 6-0. After the kickoff, Park City started from its 24. Sagona kept for a three-yard gain and Johnson then went over his left tackle for a 17-yard run to the 44. Miner progress halted there, however, and a punt gave Dugway control at its own 19. The Mustangs were unable to move the ball and the ensuing kick put the Miners at their 36. Sagona connected with tight end Les Gurski on a first down pass to the Dugway 44 and after Johnson dove for six yards Sagona and Gurski again combined for a first down, this time to the 23. On the next play, Johnson took a handoff up the middle, cut to the outside, brushed aside tacklers and went into the end zone standing up to tie the game at 6-6. Jim Higham's extra point kick veered wide to the left and the score remained knotted. An unsuccessful outside kick attempt gave Dugway Wright can't hold on to this 83 1 :VJ 411 The Miners the ball at its 4fi. A reverse on a pitchout lost 15 yards and the Mustangs were in what appeared to be a hopeless third and-30 situation. But razzle-dazzle is not dead and the Miners were asleep. Dropping into a shotgun formation, quarterback VanLiere threw a behind-the-line pass to Brown, who in turn tossed a pass to Ed Whiting for a first down with 30 seconds left in the half. Still in the shotgun, VanLiere pitched to McCurdy who raced down the sideline for another first down at the Miner 33. But VanLiere was dropped for a seven-yard loss on the next play and the half ended in a deadlock. Miners Kick Off Opting for the aid of the strong breeze in the final period, Miner coach Bob Burns elected to kickoff at the start of the second half. A first down holding call against the Mustangs prompted a third down quick kick and Park City took over at the Dugway 32. David Eley gained six yards on third down and Johnson barely struggled to a first down on the next play. On first and ten from the Mustand 23, Sagona sprinted to his right on an option play, decided to keep the ball and dodged tacklers for a touchdown touch-down with 8:22 remaining in the third quarter. Higham's kick again was no good and the Miners led 12-6. After the two teams traded punts, Dugway gained possession at its own 25. Following a first down, assisted by a face mask penalty, Dugway drove to the Miner 47. On third and eight, the Mustangs again tried the behind-the line pass. The play was diagnosed diag-nosed by Park City but the Mustang receiver managed to squirm loose and lateraled to a trailing back, giving Dugway another first at the 31. On the last play of the third i ... v pass. quarter, Whiting dashed up the middle to the 22., Two more runs by Whiting gave Dugway a first at the 12 VanLiere then faked a hand-off hand-off into the middle of the line, dropped back and hit Butch Boegler on a 12-yard scorinp pass. The conversion kick wa; blocked by Marty Cowin and the game was tied again with 10:16 remaining to be played. Mark Uriarte returned th j Kickoff to the Dugway 46. Eley, after galloping for a 15-yard gain, fumbled the ball and the Mustangs recovered re-covered at their 40. The turnover proved fatal as the Mustangs marched 60 yards in nine plays for the winning touchdown. Runs by Whiting, Boegler and Brown took Dugway to the Park City 19. Then on third-and-eight, VanLiere again faked into the middle and threw a touchdown pass to Brown to put the Mustangs in front 18-12. A two-point conversion attempt failed. Park City turned the ball over on a fumble but Dugway reciprocated and the Miners had a final opportunity at their own 31 with just over two minutes remaining. A first down pass by Sagona was picked off by Brown but the Mustangs were called for pass interference and the Miners still had a flicker of life. A pass completion to Bret Wright put Park City midfield and after missing Tim King in the right flat, the quarterback ran to the Mustang 34 for a first down. With only four seconds showing on the clock, Sagona lofted a desperation pass into the end zone that was intercepted by Whiting to end the game. The Miners, now 4-4 overall and 1-4 in league play, face the powerful North Summit Braves in this Friday's homecoming contest. So last Thursday evening Tom Snyder has two of the best bookies in the country on his show and both of them say without question that both Kansas Kan-sas City, sporting a 1-6 record, and the New York Giants, who played host to the Redskins, are the best choices for the week. Did all of us believe this and put our C-Notes on the line? Hell no. Did the Chiefs and Giants play solid football Sunday afternoon and both emerge with great victories? Hell yeah! Oh, the pain of it all, getting great information on two upsets and on Monday morning we are not presenting our friendly banker with a juicy deposit slip. The only thing worse than that might be the practice sessions the Cleveland Browns and Washington Redskins are going to have this week. When are we, the fans, and the football establishment going to realize that the Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Bucs are no longer "expansion teams" and are certainly not playing as such? In fact, the Seahawks were most impressive im-pressive Sunday as they dealt the mighty Oakland Raiders a 27-7 setback that wasn't even close. The Seahawks out rushed the Raiders 204 yards to 70 yards and made 27 first downs to 18 for Oakland. Seattle coach Jack Patera must have been feeling great after the game when he said, "Having a shutout would have been frosting on the cake, but first you make sure you win." John Madden's Raiders don't get whipped that often, much less shut out. The Los Angeles Rams fell from the unbeated ranks as the New Orleans Saints scored on a 19-yard 19-yard touchdown pass with 2:28 left in the game to secure a 10-3 victory. The Rams outrushed the Saints 158 to 40 yards, out passed them 184 yards to 78, and registered 20 first downs to 12 for New Orleans. Nevertheless, the scoreboard at the , Coliseum showed more points on the visitors side for the first loss in 12 regular season games for the Rams at home. With the season reaching the midway point, only the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Los Angeles Rams have more than a two game edge over their closest pursuers. A special attraction this week includes a Thursday night game with the Minnesota Vikings facing the Dallas Cowboys. A big one for the Vikes who must win to stay close to the packers in the NFL Central Division. : Other key matchups include the San Diego Chargers against the Oakland Raiders and the Denver Broncos in the Kingdome against the Seattle Seahawks. Bruce Johnson indicates that this technique will be valuable in deer poaching cases. Although a poacher may claim that his deer was shot at a particular time, Johnson's technique could prove otherwise. By testing the potassium content oX the vitreous humor (the fluid behind the eye), the time of a deer's death may be determined with a high degree of accuracy. The fluid is extracted ex-tracted from behind the deer's eyeball with a hypodermic hypo-dermic needle and tested in an atomic emission machine. ma-chine. - Johnson explains that the potassium level in the blood and eye remains equal when an animal is alive. However, at death, the equal inter Racquet Club change of potassium between be-tween the blood and eye fluid ceases. The vitreous humor begins absorbing potassium at a constant rate. For example, at the time of death, a deer's eye fluid contains 130 parts per million (ppm) of potassium. After the deer has been dead for 108 hours, the ratio of potassium is 1,000 ppm. Johnson, who initiated experiments ex-periments for this new method of determining time of death in deer, says human medical examiners using similar techniques are able to pinpoint time of death in humans within a half hour. Johnson knows of only one other state, Nebraska, which has experimented with potassium po-tassium levels to determine time of death in deer. Eventually, Johnson hopes to calculate the time of death for Utah's other big game by using the potassium level technique.
