No matter which one you read, you'll probably see a little of yourself in each. Who couldnt use a little boost in the areas of self esteem, organization, spouse relations, stress reduction, and dealing with anger? According to Dr. Tom Lee, family and specialist in the USU college of family life, there are about 200 books published new each year just on the topics of parenting. Many of these contain untested theories. Lee says there are no specific qualifications required to write a book, and there are no regulations to safeguard consumers of these sometimes questionable therapies. Is there any danger? He says the main danger is that your expectations may be raised with the promise of a quick and easy solution, only to find that your retd-lif- e problems are more difficult than you thought. Lee suggests these guidelines book for evaluating therapy programs: Is there any evidence other than rosy testimonials that this type of treatment works? Testimonials generally come from a select few who were successful at the program. Book promoters dont tell you hnow many people failed at the program. Does the therapy program rely on self diagnosis? Trying to change may be futile if you dont identify the problem correctly. People who blame their shyness or low self esteem on being overweight may be disappointed to find that they still have these problems even after losing weight. An evaluation from a mental-healtprofessional may at least point you in the right direction. Are environmental factors taken into consideration? The book should at least consider that part of the problem may be environmental rather than a character flaw. Stress in your life, for example, may be related to raising young children, a family, a long commute, h two-care- er or a noisy neighborhood. proTypical grams probably wont work unless some of these enstress-reductio- n vironmental circumstances change. Trying to exert more willpower may not help if some effective steps for change arent outlined. Change is part motivation or willpower and part finding new ways to achieve the rewards you want. How is success evaluated? Most people feel better temporarily simply because they have spent time and money trying to change. Successful therepy, however, should include concrete methods of measuring long-terchange. Lee says there are some exp cellent books available, but they all have built-i- limitations. There are some excellent books on working through depression, for example, that were written by competent self-hel- n mental-healt- h professionals. The problem is that if you are in a chronically depressed state,, you probably are not going t have enough energy or selr motivation to follow through on the therapies outlined in these books. Lee suggests if you do pick up a book, do so with some healthy skepticism. Realize that even if it works for somebody else, it may not work for you. Keep the parts that seem to work for you and incorporate them in your life. Change is often slow, but even small steps can make a difference for the better. self-hel- p |
