Show Nophi, Juab County, Utah 84648 Thursday, April Time To sPafe By GERALD ANDREWS Envi?rent on the Years Environment is big news these days. Its probably the most dis-cussed topic form the White House to the 'high schools. A nationwide environmental "teach- in is planned for April 22. It's good to know were all aroused at last to the dangers attacking our health and well- being. We older folks should be more concerned than anyone, be- cause a bad environment can be specially harmful to our retire- ment years. What is environment? For a definition I turn to Harvest Years which has a timely report on this subject in its March issue. "Environment is everything that surrounds and affects us. The effect can be good or bad. Its not just the house we live in, the report continues, its the air we breath, the food we eat, the sounds we hear. Its also neighbors and neighborhood, medical services, recreations, stores and products . . . and so on. The point is that we should get the best out of our surroundin the ings wherever they are city, suburbia, or down on the farm. The report, Environment for Retirement," tells how. It discusses where to live, asking us to search our hearts and minds and pinpoint our true interests before we buy or sell It offers guidelines to help us find - Retirement the rj8ht niche socially and psy. chologically There's an excellent section on climate as it affects physical and mental health. The report tells us how to evaluate what's best for us on the basis of available information . Many of us dont want to move when we retire. We prefer to settle down and enjoy life in our own hometown. And why not? We can create our own favorable environment Movers or we should all heed Harvest Years suggestions for improving our environment by eliminating ards in.it. As statistics show, far too many of our age group ne- gleet this aspect. The Environment for Retirement report also contains a table of comparative living costs for retired couples in cities across the nation. The report concludes with a breakdown of what each state offers retirees ' c1nate housing, e, f hving, and special serv- . ices. This is worth its weight in gold to those of us who want to compare various locations. All in all, "Environment for Retirement is a good howto guide.
