A reader sent the paper a coded clue that solved the year-ol- d slaying and resulted in the arrest and confession of Calvin Hoffman, 28, the said. Under the simple code system set up by the the paper did not know the name of its secret tipster and it probably never will be learned. Hoffman confessed to Police Capt. Harry Deas and assistant state's attorney Abbey Blattber. that he was one of a gang of six men who beat Herman Engelhard to death in a robbery attempt that netted only $12, the paper said. Police also arrested Mrs. Earline Madison as a result of the tip. Hoffman's confession said the robbery attempt was planned in her home. Three other men implicated by Hoffman are believed serving sentences for other crimes. One other man is being hunted. Engelhard was killed in his Sat In a South Side slum. He was a bachelor and police could unccver no clues. Officers said the crime may have gone unsolved unless the paper had set up its reward plan that resulted in the secret tip. The instituted the system after a Federal Bureau of Investigation report revealed more than 100 Chicago murders last year went unsolved. The national association of building "owners and managers has come out with some hints for better office housekeeping. Here are the suggestions: Get rid of cuspidors. They are outmoded and unsanitary and create a floor hazard. Keep desks, tables and cabinets away from the walls. They may mar the paint and plaster. Lack of space between furniture and the walls makes it hard on the cleaning lady. Keep casters on swivel chairs, typewriter stands, and other movable equipment oiled. Defective casters damage floor coverings. If you want to pin up something, pin it on a cork bulletin board. Keep notices and charts off the walls. Use desk calendars. Keep floors and the tops of cabinets free of books, magazines, papers, samples, etc. They collect dirt. "There is no reason why our 'office homes' should not be kept as neat and smart looking as our homes," says the association.
