Show THE PAGE TWO KEY TO CHECKING COSTLY CHICK ILLS . Ravages of Coccidiosis May Be Prevented. The highly contagious disease, coccidiosis, which takes hear; toll In young chicks, usually can be promptly controlled by feeding dry or liquid sklnimilk or buttermilk and practicing proper sanitation In the brooder house and yards, according to the laboratory of animal pathology and hygiene at the College of Agriculture, University of Illinois. There is no effective treatment for adult carriers of the disease. For young birds dry milk should constitute 40 per cent of the mash, and liquid sktmmllk or buttermilk should be fed straight These feeds should be before the chicks at all times for a period of two weeks and should be supplemented dally with a small amount of grain and green feed. disCoccidiosis Is a ease, and consequently sanitation Is the foundation of control. It was pointed out by Dr. J. P. Torrey, asfilth-born- e sistant pathologist of the Illinois state department of agriculture, who Is stationed at the laboratory. Contaminated droppings become infective within 43 hours or more. Ilence prompt and regular cleanliness In the brooder house, hen house and yards is very necessary. Contaminated soil Is the most common means of spread, since the disease may Uve there for two or three years. Attendants oft,en carry the Infection into the brooder house from contaminated yards. A system of yard rotation or keeping the fowls on wire or concrete is the only way to eliminate soil infesta-tio- a The disease is caused by microscopic protozoan parasites which develop and multiply in the walls of the fowl's intestines. The acute form of the disease occurs most in chicks two to ten weeks of age and causes death without noticeable symptoms. In attacks, loss of appetite, droopiness, ruffled feathers, drooping wings, drawn-i- n head and death in two to four days are some of the symptoms. The droppings may be bloody, brownish or quite dark. Bloody droppings usually are seen In the early stages of an outbreak. The chronic form of the disease occurs mostly in older fowls and usually is characterized by loss of appetite, loss In weight, dirty plumage, paleness of the comb and wattles and sometimes paralysis. Since such fowls are usually carriers, they should not be in contact with young chickens. Doubtful cases should be referred to the local veterinarian for diagsub-acut- e nosis. Selection of Breeding Rooster Vital Matter Roosters, if matured by the beginning of the breeding season, nre more reliable breeders the first season than afterwards, producing more young, though the quality may be somewhat Inferior to what the same birds would produce in their second and third breeding seasons. In large breeds mate six to ten hens with one male and with lighter breeds the proportion may be as high as 12 to 15 hens to one rooster. Males should be kept separate from the females except in the breeding season. In a large flock where males and females ran together promiscuously the dominant male may be ruined by overwork. Some regulation is advisable in such cases. Eggs d eggs may result from lack of lime in the ration, a defect that can be corrected by keeping d Sally Scz WfiL Arthur Brisbane France Is Worried Have It, Then Advertise A La Follette Beaten The Cost of Crime The French Government accuses Germany of secretly arming for a war of revenge, already well planned, with the recapture of as its object, also recapture of the colonies that France and England divided between them. French newspapers express alarm and warn readers with such headings as "Germany is openly preparing for war." All this bodes ill for the disarmament conference. The intelligent French realize that their hope of keeping what they took depends on their ability to meet any attack. Premier Ilerriot says he is ready to prove to the League of Nations that Germany has been manufacturing arms secretly. It is to be hoped that our childish nation will be allowed to keep out of whatever happens. Russia is said to be much relieved, convinced that the war of "capitalism" against herself, which has been her nightmare, will be long postponed. : e-Lorraine To succeed, first get what people want, then, by advertising, let them know you have it. Competition as keen as any in the country, is that between various makers of electric refrigerators. The others will want to know that E. G. Blechler, president of a branch of General Motors, announced a new construction idea to Increase storage space in a refrigerator by 25 per cent without Increasing outside dimensions. This sounds like putting a quart into a pint, but not when responsible engineers propose it. What interests newspaper publishers is the fact that having a good idea, the company will immediately spend half a million dollars to let the people know that they have it. Probably General Electric will come along with a plan to put two quarts into one pint, with advertising information interesting to newspaper publishers. Announcing his new plan, Mr. Biechler also announces a reduction in price. First, get what the people want, and then, by advertising it, let them know that you have got it. Intelligent advertising, increasing volume makes price reduction possible. vcw - m If.-- BGIEIR BEVERLT HILLS.
