Appropriate decorations and stunts motivated the event. The speaker of the day was Orant Gardner of the high school faculty whose topic was "Why Do We Edu cate?" Mr. Gardner said In part: "Herbert Spencer, a great educa tional philisopher has said that education Is for complete living; but while great philosophers all accept this reasoning today, there are cer tain forces working against the realization In practice of the Ideas universaUy accepted in theory. "First, too much emphasis has been placed on the gaining of wealth as a factor of education. The average man sees his school career as a period of learning to make money and when he is through he goes out to make money. Often this philosophy expresses Itself In perverted means of gaining wealth such as robberies and crooked deals because such action suggests easy money. Dr. Livingston Farrand says: "Present education teaches us how to make a living; not how to .. sunk Posterity! the Legislation passed since world war by both the government and state was fully outlined by Attorney Will L. In addition to the proclamation by the Mayor, a very suitable program has been arranged for that occasion, which will Include musical numbers, and short talks. The program will be followed by the planting of trees by the various civic clubs of Nephl, among which are the Nephl Kiwanis club. The American Legion, The Service Star Legion, The. American Legion Auxiliary, The Business and Profession- al Women's club, The Ladies Literary club, church organizations and others. For several months past, the Park committee, representing the com bined clubs and organizations of Nephi has been carrying on the necessary preliminary work, and during last week the fence was taken down and hauled to the fair grounds, and arrangements have already been made to remove the grandstand to the fair grounds. The making of a real city park Is going to take a lot of hard work and effort, and the committee asks for the support of the entire population of the city in this undertaking, and asks their cooperation In coming out next in the Saturday and participate opening exercises. Plans for the new park have been approved by the committee, and all trees have been selected and designated for the various parts of the park. The plan has been carefully gone over by the committee and Is very suitable for a community park. The committee plans on getting some trees to set out this year, and then each year Improve the area until It is completed, when it will be one of the beauty spots of Utah. Finances will not permit the Improvement in any one year, but a five year program will find the Nephi City park a thing of beauty and a Joy forever. re Paint and varnish applied promptly when the surfaces need renewed protection more than pay for themselves.
