During the long years these same people nave spent hundreds of dollars getting data and making surveys to bring water into our valley, until they have practically given up hope. We cannot help but feel somewhat the same way ourselves, but we cannot quit, we cannot stand Idly by and see the rest of the world go on. We must put our shoulder to the wheel and push alonx we must not lose sight of one single chance to make Juab Valley a better place to carry on the work of making a better living for Its citizens. We must give each and every project that comes to our attention due consideration, and careful thought and the necessary cooperation. Right at the present time, a movement Is under way to underwrite the cost of drilling a test well In Juab Valley, and this project, while we are uncertain as to the outcome, we believe Is one of the most logical undertakings that has ever been considered In the history of Nephi. The plan as outlined contemplates the signing of some thirty men to underwrite the project, and If the well Is a success, then the man whose land it was drilled on. pay the cost of the well, and if it is a failure, each man stand his share of the cost. It Is reported that some of the farmers are already enthusiastic over this plan, and lr the committee works diligently It should be put over during the next month. The plan looks good to us, and we are boosting It with all of our ability. It takes hard work and a lot or cooieratlon to put anything over. Give the committee your help in this movement. ABO PATRONIZE LOCAL MERCHANTS. Patronizing peddlers is like cultivating weeds Instead ol beautiful trees. Weeds are not reliable In anything but persistencetomorrow they will be no bigger or useful than they are today. Established business houses in your locality are valuable to you and your community. Patronize, encourage and cultivate the local business men who show their good business intentions and good business principles by the kind of establishments they maintain; thus you help to build permanently for your community and yourself. True enough, many things can be bought over the bargain counter in larger centers, but those firms who hand out tne bargains are not the ones who extend credit to you in the darkest times of depression. They care not whether you live or die, whereas your local merchant is likened to the "big brother" who sees your problems and extends you the courtesies received only by personal contact. Many people who buy articles or receive professional service In larger centers and think they are getting a bargain remind one of the story of the fellow who walked into an assayer's office and handed him a lump of yellowish looking ore, which he wished to have analyzed. The assayer lookea at the ore and then the gleam of joy in his visitor's eyes and said, "I suppose you think this is gold." Of course the visitor, having built many hopes on the expectation that it was gold, said, "Why, yes, that is gold, Isn't It?" The assayer then replied, "Why, no, that Is pyrites of Iron, commonly known as 'fool's gold'." The visitor upon receiving this answer, Immediately dropped his chin and had a very gloomy and despondent look come on his face. In order to console somewhat the fellow, the assayer ventured, "Why, what is the matter, friend, you don't need to feel so bad, aren't you Just as rich as you were before you found this stuff?" The visitor replied, "Why, no. I married a widow up on Horse Creek with thirteen children and all she has got in the world is a hill full of that stuff I" When an epidemic of disease breaks out in a small community, all the people cannot run to a large center to receive medical aid. They must depend entirely upon their local physicians. When a person wakes up in the middle of the night with a badly ulcerated tooth, it Is a real convenience to have a dentist near at hand whom he can call upon for relief. When a hurricane or an earthquake or similar disasters strike stores and the bargain counters localities, it isn't the who give immediate relief to the afflicted people, it is their local banks, stores, garages, drug stores, cafes, theatres, men and other local institutions which give this first aid. It is well- to remember that every person almost daily requires some- convenience offered by the business concerns In his community, and it is also well to remember and keep in mind that the people who trade at other concerns outside of their community in order to save a dime here and there (far more seldom than one would think and more often resulting in being "gypped") are killing the goose that laid the golden eggs, they are marrying a widow with thirteen children with nothing but a hillful of "fool's gold." Girl's basketball is becoming very popular among the fem-eniathletics of the Juab High. The girl hoopsters have played a wonderful brand of 'female' ball and have won twice over the Levan high girls. ne ed . 0c The Juab High girls wiU attempt to out score the Tlntic High girls in a 'hot' preliminary contest tomorrow evening. The game, will be played previous to the league game with Tintic High, commencing at 6:30. The stars of the girls basket ball team include many of the feminine personnel of the school. A few girls who have played ball during the outstanding few games played by the 'female' team are: Mildred Hall, Florence Belliston, Reva Vlck-er- s, Katherlne Phillips, Ina Painter, Fern Jayne, Thelma Reid, Marjorie Lunt and Afton Greenwood. The starting lineup for the big game with Tintic girls, will be chosen from these players. Our weather predictions in this column last week failed to materialize. The rain, however, did hit Springville, but it was from the north, rather than from the Juab High team, as stated. Basket ball is slowly fading from light in Nephi and surrounding towns. The local team will see its last scheduled action in the J. H. S. gym tomorrow evening. This column will be discontinued until the leather pills begin to get workouts next winter. The first pulled up his team In front of a cabin and addressed an elderly man sitting on a stump and puffing contentedly a corn-co- b pipe. "Hey, Old Timer, what kind of folks are there around these parts?" "What kind of folks were there where you came from?" countered the resident. "Why, they were the meanest, slickest, most unpleasant people I ever saw." "Well," drawled the old pioneer, "I reckon you'll find the folks around here Just about the same." A few weeks later another settler came along, asked a similar question, and was answered by the same counter Interrogatory. He replied briskly, "Why the folks around about where I came from were the salt of the earth, the finest, fairest, and most helpful folks you could find anywhere. They were neighbors we just hated to leave." "Well," answered teh local sage, "I reckon you'll find the folks here just about the same."
