YOU EVER WONDERED WHY VICTORIAN PERIOD WAS SO UNPRODUCTIVE OF BEAUTY THE Most of the modern furniture and furnishings are inspired by the best from the past ages. Thus the Italian Renaissance, Early English, Georgian, French periods and early American styles are heavily drawn from to fashion the modern home. The comparatively recent Victorian era, frequently referred to as the "mauve decade" or the "gay nineties." failed to produce hardly anything worth passing on. Photographs of room interiors of forty years ago show a "hodgepodge" of fussy brie a brae and "Whatnots" which today are pointed out as examples of what to avoid in interior decoration. The style degeneracy of this period was probably the result of the manufacturing era, then ushered in. With the invention of the steam engine, hand work was eliminated and the rapidity of machine made commodities was stressed. Styles were standardized to conform to machine methods and homes were furnished with an eye to quantity rather than quality, thus removing any incentive for skilled workmanship. ? V m.
