HANSEN Landscape Gardening Specialist Many varieties of annual flowers are valuable for the flower garden. A great variety of colors as well as different sizes are found among them a number of which are particularly adapted for the use of cut flowers. Some of these varieties can be planted direct in the garden in the early spring as soon as the ground la dry enough to be worked and the soil easily pulverized. The seed should be at depths varying with the particular variety, but directions for planting are now given on all seed packages. Some of the varieties which can be planted direct in the ground are: Calendular, Centaurea, Convolvolus, Poppy, Nasturtium, mignonette and Sweet Pea, In order to reach maturity and to get the best result in one season It is recommended to plant the seed of certain varieties indoors in boxes or poU during the last half of the month of .March. The boxes used for this should be from two to three inches deep, and supplied with holes in the bottom for drainage. These holes can- - be covered with rocks which will permit the water to escape. The soil mixture recommended for such planting is as follows: Fine screened soil 3 parts Screened sand 1 part, v After filling the boxes or pots the soil should be leveled and pressed firmly with a piece of flat board. The seed should then be sown and covered to a depth of about four times the thickness of the seed with a fine sifted soil mixture, which is pressed down firmly with a flat Bar-toni-a, piece of board. After sowing it is recommended to place the seed boxes or pots in a basin or tub with one or two inches of water In the bottom, and left until the soil has been thoroughly saturated from the bottom to the top. The seeds will not be disturbed It this method of watering is followed. The seed box or pots should be placed in a sunny window and covered with a piece of glass, which in turn Is covered with A paper until the seeds have started growth. The covering should then be removed ai .once so that the small seedlings will not be smotheed. Water should be applied as often asnecessary, the soil never being allowed to become dry. The visit of Herbert Hoover to South America will undoubtedly have this wholesome effect. His purpose was to create that much needed spirit of good will. He was hopeful of establishing the most friendly relations possible between ourselves and our neighbors In South America. When governments, like Individuals, know one another, difficult political prob lems are less likely to arise. The wholesome effect of this visit upon our own country Is also a noteworthy achievement South America with her scattered population of about sixty million people will doubtless make rapid advances In the near future In her political and economic life. They will need the help s.nd counsel which such a government as ours can offer. Such friendly relations will also have a most salutary efc feet In promoting equitable trade relations between South America and ourselves. To what better use could Mr. Hoover have devoted part of bis time, prior to his inauguration than to such a visit as this? The press of the country, through its editorial columns, have commented favorably upon It Surely nothing but good can result. In one of his recent addresses, Mr Hoover said: "Through greater understanding that comes with more con tact we may build up that common respect and service which Is the only enduring basis of International rein tlons." m thiSp tfwiif' fe-'Sii for you. it sound too good to be true your at the same washed and damp-drie- d time, the water handled for you and tha whole waiJi on the line in half the time, without DOES a single button to be sewed on, and without deep wrinkles thst are hard to iron out?
