REFUSING THE LIGHT Joha 5:23-3- 5 By Pastor Keith E. South First Baptist Church The Pharisees knew John the Baptist and respected him. They sent a delegation to qiies- -, tion him about his relationship to the Messiah. They listened to him as they would any prophet and rejoiced, for a time, in what he had to say. So when the Pharisees began to question Jesus concerning His divine claims, Jesus referred to John. John, whom the Jew- -' J ish leaden respected, testified to the' ( truth of Jesus identity. But die Phari. sees refused to listen to the truth. Jesus told them and us that it is true, not because He needs die confirmation of mere humans. His own word is sufficient, but to call them and us to salvation. Maybe if they were reminded of what John taught, they might turn from their sins and be saved! John preached repentance to all who heard him testify of the truth about Jesus, and pointed to the Messiah as the only hope of Gods salvation. Despite Johns preaching of the truth, die Pharisees refused to believe in Jesus as the Christ Even though Johns ministry was a burning and shining light, full of zeal and truth, the Pharisees only tolerated it for a season. When it came time for them to make a decision for themselves concerning Jesus, they remained hardened in dteir sin. The lesson is a sobering, one. Many people delight in hearing about the Gospel. Though they might enjoy listening to Gods messenger. many never come to saving faith. They may COPY enjoy the preacher and his delivery, but when it comes time for diem to embrace the truth and take Jesus as their own they turn away. They cant accept the narrow way. They are unwilling to give up the pleasures of this world and the desires of their flesh. The cost of following Christ is just too great They cannot embrace Him as their Sovereign King and submit to His authority. Unfortunately this is the case with many w ho seem to show such promise. They enter the church with zeal, but they soon leave, downcast and burdened by their sin yet unwilling to part with it This was die case with many of the Jews, is it that way with you? It doesn't have to be. Through repentance and forgiveness you can be restored unto the Lord. Then it is a matter of submitting to the Lord and His Word the Bible. Maybe it is because you have never really taken, by faith, Jesus as your Saviour. You can do that right now. The Bible says that wt are all sinners in need of a Saviour and that Jesus is that Saviour. If we will put all of our faith in His atoning sacrifice for our salvation and believe that He rose from the dead three days later, it is just a matter of accepting the gift of eternal life that God offers to all men. By simple faith, would you accept Jesus as your Saviour today? If you have any questions concerning eternal life, please call Pas3 tor South at and he would count it a privishow to lege you from the Bible how you loo can be saved. professional installation!
