We see a large number of patients with symptoms of GERD, which is short for gastroesophageal reflux disease, says Dr. David S. Utley. This occurs when stomach acids and digestive enzymes back up into the esophagus (the tube above the stomach) and the jupper throat. An estimated 100 million Americans suffer from heartburn and other GERD symptoms, spending a total of $3.7 billion annually on antacids and other medications to relieve their symptoms, Utley says. While medication prescribed by a family physician, gastroenterologist or other specialist is clearly necessary for some GERD sufferers, weve learned from research that the vast majority of patients can reduce or eliminate GERD symptoms with some relatively simple strategies, says Utley. His advice: Limit or avoid foods that cause the acid backup, or reflux. These include caffeine, fatty foods, carbonated beverages, cause acid backup can occur more readily when gravity isnt pulling the acid down. Elevate the head of your bed by 3 to 6 inches. Try to reduce stress through daily walks, meditation, recreational reading, soft music or other relaxation techniques. Ask your physician whether any medications you are taking may be making the GERD worse. While physicians may recommend continued use of medication, they may have alternatives that dont cause heartburn. As much as possible, avoid tight clothing around your midsection. Avoid belching, straining, squatting and bending as much as possible. In general, begin a healthy living program, including exercise, reduced-fa- t diet, weight control and no smoking. If GERD symptoms persist, patients can seek medication from a physician, after-scho- ERA CASCADE George and Judy Ann Phillips Nephi 623-198- 9, NEW ON THE MARKET: I U i ol .THEN CHOOSE YOUR DEAL! 1st in Service." t NEPHI: Victorian home with modem addition over 6,000 square feet of living area Everything you could want in a home.
