Time will most likely show that it was the result of a deliberate conspiracy to kill and murder the crew of a warship fiying the American flag. Pending an intestigation the American people are asked to be patient and not to form hasty judgment. This is asking a great deal. And what it led to. It ot a common occurence that a should ve the ineatxs of living nearly iorty years ot happiness and health to the person heeding the advice it carried. This was the case with Mary sne was Lmgard. Some cases are more stubborn than others, but persistence with Dr. Ayers Sarsaparilla usually results in a complete cure. Mary Dingard began with a bottle, and went on to a course of Dr. Avers Sarsaparilla. When she was cured she realized that a medicine that could cure disease could also prevent it. Work progressed slowly, for a plant had to he built up. The vessel, without armor and fittings, was launched Nov. 19, 1890, in the presence of a great crowd and with much ceremony, her sponsor being Miss Alice Tracy granddaughter of Secretary Tracy, then at the head of the navy department. Her official trial took place in October, 1894. The Maine was a tw armored turret vessel of the belted cruiser type, that is, having an armor belt to protect the vitals of the ship, even though the other parts of the construction should be riddled with shot. The Maine had for protection against an opponents projectiles an armor belt twelve inches thick, tapering to seven inches beiow the water line. The end3 were unprotected by side armor, but at both ends there were transverse armor bulkheads of sufficient thickness to deflect any projectiles that might reach so far. A curving steel deck protected the engines and boilers. The barbette armor was twelve inches in thickness and the turret armor plates were eight inches thick. Formidable as a Flfhter. As a fighter the Maine was a formidable ship. Her main battery consisted of four g rifles in the two turrets and six g rifles. The secondary battery consisted of four and four rapid-fir- e guns, four revolving cannon, and four Gatlings. There were also three torpedo tubes below water and Wil-merdin- breech-loadin- breech-loadin- RHEUMATISM, NEURALGIA, CURED Da- Ryan, paymaster. Charles P. Howell, chief engineer. Frederick C. The Maine was regarded as one of the most effective vessels in the American navy. In speaking of her just after she was put in commission a naval officer said that she is not a cruiser, but a fighting ship, a floating fort. She is meant strictly for business. The keel of the Maine was laid In the Brooklyn navy yard in October, 1888. The dimensions of the hull were: Length over all, 324 feet 4V2 inches; at water line, 310 feet; breadth of beam, 57 feet; mean draught, 21Vz feet; displacement, 6,648 tons. A sail area was allowed of 7,135 square feet, to be used 10-in- FOR 30 DAYS MORE YOU CAN TRY IT FOR 25 CENTS. Bronson and Her Cost fr2.500.000. The Maine had eight steel horizontal boilers, vertical inverted cylinder di- rect acting triple expansion twin screw engines of 9,000 indicated horse power. She carried 822 tons of coal, with which she could steam 2,770 knots at 14.8 knots an hour, or 7.000 knots at 10 knots an hour. She had a double bottom and numerous water-tigcompartments. The full complement of men carried by the Maine when she was put in commission was 306 besides the officers and forty marines. The Maine, though a type of construction last improved upon, was one of the best vessels of Americas new navy. She cost, all told, $2,500,000. Captain Richard D. Sigsbee, who was In command of the waiship Maine, is one of the most popular officers in the navy. His record since he was graduated from Annapolis in 1803 is fine. He served in Mobile Bay, wyas an active participant in the work of the North Atlantic blockading squadron in 1865, and helped in the attacks and in the final assault upon Fort Fisher. Not long ago the Maine, with Sigsbee in command, found herself bearing down on an excursion boat in the East river. Ahead was the excursion boat full of humaD beings. On either side was a barge. The only clear way snowed a pier. The old commander ordered his engines reversed, and to the amazement of the beholders he steered straight for the pier and ran into it amuck. The pier was badly torn up, the Maines nbse was bruised, hut several hundred human lives were saved. The excursion boat ran clear, but ten loaded freight cars that were standing on the pier went to the bottom of the river. There is no doubt as to Captain Sigsbees relative valuation of human life and property. About $4,000 in property was destroyed, but 1,000 lives were saved. That was not a bad ten minutes wrork for a man whose business it is to kill. ht COMPASS IS ERRATIC. In Russia the Magnetic Needle Often PlajS Puzzling Tricks. From the New York Times: One of Russias innumerable mysteries is the erratic behavior of the magnetic needle in many parts of the great empire. The compass is freaky enough anywhere, but it seems to take a particular delight in refusing to point north for the subjects of the czar. French and Russian scientists have recently been investigating this subject on the vast central plain between Moscow and Kharkov. The greatest aberrations were found in the province of Kursk, the capital town of which Is some 600 miles almost due south of Moscow. In the northern part of the province, near Tim, the needle deflects 20 degrees; further south, in the province of Staroi Oskol, up to 30 degrees, whila in the southeast of the province, about 150 miles south of Tim, the deflection is over 96 degrees, the needle standing almost perpendicular and pointing nearer east and west than north and south. This reversal of the magnetic forces may have some curious effects.
