Show U THE TREE. HANGMANS the Eluding of the Fmoi Mas of (old. The most interesting thing I remem her in a long life spent in mining, says an old Australian miner, is the story of the finding of the Napier nugget, probably the largest and purest mass of gold ever found. Sam Napier was second mate on a boat plying between Melbourne and Liverpool when the Australian gold fever broke out. He started with his biother and another man for t lie gold fields in 1857. They finally located at Kingower, on the Lodden river. One day, Aug. 14 it was. the three nit n were just on the point of having their vvoik at the bottom of a shaft when Sam Napier, in putting down his pick, struck something hard. He turned it over moie in idle curio-- . ty than an thing on a hrg mass else, and the light f of what appealed to ho virgin gold, almost heavier than he, stumg man as he was, could lift. The three men saw at a glance that Har lortunes were made, and vveie aline st fi antic with delight. However, they covered up their treasuie with earth and went to their tent as if nothing hid happened. In the dead of the night they went back to their ela'm, can led ofi the nugget, and, for safety, bin md it six feet deep under the table in tie center of their tent. Lor thiee months they had their meals over these buii. d thousands, and never breathed a word to a living soul. When their claim was exhausted about the middle of November they hired a cart, dug up tneir nugget, and placed it, together with their dust, in a box among a lot of old clothes, and started on a four days tramp to Melbourne. Here they consigned it, through the Bank of Viotoiia, to England, paying something like $1,100 export duty and When London was $450 for insurance. reached the fame of this wondertul nugget had somehow preceded them, and the men and their rock of gold were a seven days wonder. All the fashionable world crowded to see it, and even the queen was not happy until she had seen this marvelous nugget and the men who had found it. It was sold to the Bank of England for $50,000, and it burned the scales at 34 pounds over a hundredweight. It was within an eighth of a carat of being absolutely pure gold. For some time it was exhibited at the British Museum and a cast of it was taken for preservation at the museum. And yet this wonderful discovery seemed to bring nothing hut misfortune to its finders. Sam Napier married, went to Liverpool, and quickly lost all his money there. He returned to the diggings, blit though he spent years in hunting for mote gold, he never found any.
