I was authored for throe moalhs over the true source of the Gulf stream, unJ what I learned of the nature of aud erratic current during that t.uio kuocks all the accepted theories as to lie origin in the head." The, spoke W. 8. Howard, late of the Tinted State, oout surrey a teataer Blake, to a Philadelphia Inquirer reporter. "I was attached to tb, Blake for three yean. " continued Mr. Howard, and during that time we definitely fixed the source ot the Gulf stream 17 e spent two years in tracing np the Gulf stream and studying its peculiarities, and while we are still in the dark a, to the primary causo of this great ocean river, we hare definitely fixed upon the spot where it originates. Formerly it was believed that the Gulf stream was simply the continuation of the Missits.ppi river, the immense volume of water flowing out of which cleaved its way through old ocean, and preserving its own distinctive characteristics as to temperature and color, finally waa lost and assimilated bv tho waters of the frojan northern seas. Others hold to the opinion that tho Gulf stream was formed and controlled by the trade w inds. observation, and investigations furnished us with conclusive proof that neither ot these elements had any thing to do with it One curious fact was established, howsver. We found that the moon affected the Gulf stream, and that the current was controlled absolutely and arbitrarily by that body. The true eouroe or beginning of the Gulf stream, established by careful scientific observation extending over a period of two years, is at a point between Fowey Rocks, Florida, and the 'Gun Hoy, on tho coast of the Bahamas. At this place, in 483 fathoms of water, we anohored, and for months devoted ourselves to a careful study of the great ocean river. Let me tell you something about the peculiarities that we noticed. To begin with, the current of the Gulf stream at the point where we were anohored, and whloh wa unanimously agreed upoo as Its true source, varies daily in its velocity. The difference In the flow was at times as much as two and a half knot, per hour. The greatest velocity noted was generally about nine hours before the upner transit of the moon. Tho vanatlona were most on the eastern aide of the straits, and least on the western side. The average dally ourrents vary during the month, the strongest current coming a day or two after the greatest declination ot tha moon. Tha axis or true point of beginning cf the Gulf stream (determined by fixing the position of the strongest surface flow) is eleven and a half mlloe east ot the Fowoy Rocks The strongest surface current found here was five and a quarter knots per hour, the least one and knots, and the average three and six tenths knots. We used two meters in our observations, one for tho surface current and one for the tub surface stream. The wind has no effect upon the velocity of the current. The surface current, it was notioed, has a much higher velocity than the During our observations we occupied twenty-sidifferent stations, at each for several days at anchored boing a time. We took 1 657 current observations with the meter, and 1,807 current observations with the pole during this ttmo." "And what deductions did you makol" These only t That neither the Mississippi river nor the trade winds were in any way responsible for the Gulf stream; that It was affected by the changes ot the moon, and that this particular point, lllf miles cast of Fowey Rooks light house, was its true axlB or source." What theories have you in reference to the first cause of tha stream!" Hundreds. It is a great field for speculation. Just imagine, if you oan, what wouid have been tho result if we could have donned submarine armor and dived to the bottom in 4?3 fathoms of water. Wo mado soundings, but they revealed to us nothing. Trio cottom was a sandy, coral foundatlm; flh aud othor submarine crotturos lived and deported themselves in tha , end all the time that surging, rosisticss current boiled about ue, defying inquiry os to its true origin It might ic, for aught any one could say o the ecu rttry, the mouth of a great river, with the course deep down in the bo wo1 a of tho earth, among those everlasting tires that scientists tell us are continually burning thero. Tho Superheated water gushing to tho surface cf tho ocean at that depth with a power that can not bo eati.T.utcd would bo apt to displace the chilled and heavier water of tho o can, nod, with an initial vo looity of nearly six miles an hour, would self a pathway through certainly clea-fthooccen ur.'il chii od and nndored inert by tho frozen waters of the Arctic soas.
