Show The Ensign. GENERAL CONFERENCE. Annual Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-da- y Saints will commence at lo oclock The Fifty-nint- h on Saturday morning, April 6th, 1889, in the Tabernacle, in Salt Lake City, The officers and members of the Church are cordially invited to attend. 0 Wilford Woodruff, In behalf of the 1 welve Apostles. LOST. Twas a summer ago when he left me here A summer of smile; with never a tear Till I said to him, with a sob, my dear Good-bymy lover, good-by- For I loved him, oh, as the stars love night! And my cheeks for him flashed red and white When first he called me his hearts delight my lover, good-bye- ! The touch of his hand was a thing divine As he sat with me in the soft moonshine And drank of my love as men drink wine Good-bymy lover good-bye- ! Good-by- e, e, And never a night as I knelt in prayer. In a gown as white as our own souls ' were, But in fancy he came and kissed me there Good-by- e, my lover, good-bye- "LOST IN LONDON. We grumble graatly over the signs that power in our country has left the people and is now with the few. But could anything else be expected? What is government but business? A community agrees to live under certain regulations; its object is the pursuit of happiness under good rules, by which they may carry on their lawful business and be protected against wrong doers. Had any company of merchants gone into an agreement and given to the ir servants the same power the people have given to theirs namely, power to make all laws and rules; to make more offices and salaries, etc, without any reference to their masters or asking consent, where would that same company find itself after some years? Ousted, disinherited, plucked and impoverished. In fact just in the condition of the common people Either the people can not rule; or they can and should rule. He is a simpleton who thinks the present condition can last. The impulse toward concentration of all power in the hands of a small class or caste of wealthy corporators is frightful. Just go back twenty years in review and see what has been done. The condition of the United States Senate is a perfect illustration of the result of such government The House is in reality but little better and is fast becoming what the Senate is. What does it mean? It means that wealth, aristocracy, owns the country and governs it through its representatives. And this same caste has so organized the legislative bodies that a plain, poor man has no business there, no influence whatever. He is made purposely ridiculous there until he has been sent there a number of terms. Socially he is a nobody in Washington and Washington society has more power over legislation than a dozen states. It is no longer a government by the people. Our Local Actors Scot e ! But now, O God! what an emptv place My whole heart is! Of the old embrace And the kiss I loved there lives no my lover good-bye- ! trace-Good-b- He sailed not over the stormy sea; And he went not down in the waves not he But oh, he is lost for he married me Good-bymy lover, good-bye- ! James Whitcomb Tiley. for Themselves A Great Success, It is difficult to undertake a criticism of the theatrical performances given ct the Social Hall last Friday, Saturday and Monday evenings with Saturday matinee, for several reasons, the most important of which is that the scenery and accommodations our hall affords are so abominable, that the Thespians best work shows to very poor advantage and his defects loom up with much more prominence than they would on a proper stage. It can be said however, that, from an artistic point of view, the performance of ".Lost in London was superior to anything a local troupe has done for a long lime. Much care had been taken in dressing the stage and rehearsing the piece; and right here we may state parenthetically, that if these two things were always attended to as well, the first nights performance would not be so shabbily patronized as it always i3 in Nephi when a home troupe is advertised. The piece was admirably cast and although it is a heavy one, the entire play at each performance went off with a smoothness and grace that was a pleasant surprise to the onlookers and cause for much justifiable pride to each and all of the actors. Each character was well sustained. "Job Armroyd, the doting, but noble and honest laborer, was portrayed true to life by L. L. Hudson, who carried the part through every act scene and speech as though he was, m reality, suffering from the wrongs of a deep dyed villain. He seemed to lose his identity in the part of the suffering old man in search of his lost wife. His honest pride of his young and lovely wife was sublime; the scene in the coal mine, where he was informed of his wifes yielding to temptation and his smotheing the feeling of revenge and remembering only the promise to the dead to protect the child was a master effort and was deserving of much more applause than was given the search for the lost one; the finding of her in the gay home of the villain who had robbed him of his treasure, his meeting-fWitthe villain; his kindly care of the fallen one and his last scene with her before her death were all touching and pathos unbounded was portrayed. Mr. Hudson never was before the public in a character, in which he did better. He played with much care, so much so at times that his articulation was so slow as to become painful, but this with oc- - y. e! e, WHY GRUMBLE? FERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. Place her in any roll you will and she does creditable work, but in this last play as the robust and hearty, honest Tiddy, she too, outdid her past efforts. She dressed her part with perfect taste and so found her way into the hearts of her audience that they experienced a sens of deep ease and pleasure every time she made her appearance. Miss Mary Schroder as Flounce made a neat and lively servant girl. She caught the spirit of her part and played with a vivacity .that w'as indeed sparkling. She dressed to good advantage and looked really pretty. The song by Mrs. Andrew Palmer lent much to the success of the play and was well render- ed and highly appreciated by the aud-- I ience.
