While it is understandably true that all of us would like an auditorium facility within a few blocks of our home, we must look beyond our own interests and consider those of the entire county, for the welfare of the county is, after all, our own welfare. We must not let our emotions obscure the fact that the only place an auditorium can succeed is downtown. Let's look at the facts: (1) Based on his experience in the auditorium business and upon a careful study of Salt Lake County, Francis Deering, president of the International Association of Auditorium Managers, urged a n downtown site for the Salt Lake County center complex. (2) Three members (all auditorium managers) of the New Building Consulting Board of the International Association of Auditorium Managers, spent five days in Salt Lake County studying all possible sites, and unanimously recommended a downtown site. study of auditoriums by the Stanford Research Institute reported that a downtown location tends to maximize attendance at events. For the same event, a suburban location draws from 10 to 40 per cent fewer people than does a downtown facility. Facilities in several suburban areas with more centrally located competitors have been forced at times to offer their space for rent for storage purposes because of the drawing power of their downtown competitors. (3) A nation-wid- e 6 Mid-vale- 255-355- BATTERIES have the only Locally Seasoned and Manufactured Wood Kitchen Units in Utah . . . We ! if available, or in taxis. (Keep in mind, too, that there will be many events scheduled especially for children. A downtown site will make it easy for them to attend these events.) All Salt Lake County roads will lead to the downtown area. When completed, freeways will make downtown just minutes away from any point in the valley. (6) Conventions will go only where there is adequate housing, restaurants and retail shops within easy access to members. Only the downtown area offers these facilities adequately. It has been conservatively estimated that a downtown auditorium-arena-conventi- on center complex will add $15,000,000 in new dollars spent annually in the county by convention attendees. New money means new jobs. It has been said that the revenue from conven- tions would all accrue to the people of Salt Talr City. This is not true, for approximately one out of every three persons employed within the city limits lives in the county outside the city limits. Therefore, one out of each three newly created jobs in the city goes to a county resident. Salt Lake County desperately needs an center. It would in many be a basic respects industry new to the economy. New millions are needed to create the 7,000 to 10,000 new jobs required every year to stay even with our current growth. An auditorium is an economic necessity. But if it is to be successful from all standpoints, it must be built downtown. auditorium-arena-c- onvention The auditorium arena convention center bond election must not be a fight between Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County. The city is a part of the county. We are engaged in an economic battle with the rest of the west a fight for new business, convention dollars, cultural advantages that now pass us by. Other western metropolitan areas would like to see us fail, for they would get the new business by default. -- (4) In a questionnaire mailed to 28 managers of auditoriums in cities comparable in size to our area, 26 of these managers reported a downtown location was essential for the success of an auditorium.
