Show How to drive MEANEST PERSON IN TOWN and Our vote for the meanest person in the county is the somebody who poisoned the dogs of Mrs. Lynn Larsen. Mrs. Larsen is a widow in her seventies. She lives alone at 20th East and 7200 South, and tends children for other people for her alive subsistence. She has eight companions to keep her company eight Pomer anian dogs who are exceptionally well-trainand They never all night illdren come play or when Mrs. Larsen is out with them. These dogs are Mrs. Larsen's only by Robert ed Goff well-behav- These moments of spring that have been tantalizing us the past few weeks have brought forth many early flowers. They also nave brought forth many new bicycle riders. New riders are a hazard while they learn to balance and ride their bikes. However, the hazard is sharply increased by Improper riding in direct violation of sound riding rules and the law. Since there seems to be so much confusion concerning bicycle traffic law, on the part of bicyclists, parents, and teachers, this week's column is being devoted to bicycle safety. The basic bicycle traffic rules are the same as those governing automobiles. These are considerable different from pedestrian rules youngsters have been taught and have followed for years. It Is. only natural that the new bicyclist would follow the familiar pedestrian rules, unless he. is taught bicycle rules at the time he learns to ride. Both parents and teachers have an obligation to know the law and sound riding practices and teach accordingly. Bike riders of all ages have a legal and moral obligation to abide by the law and safe bicycle practices. Probably the most frequently vitiated rule in our neighborhood is that the bicycle riders are required by law to ride on the right hand side of the road. This is according to Utah law. This is according to sound driving practices. ed. "family." . few days ago someone tossed poison into the dogs' pens. Mrs. Larsen woke up to hear them crying, brought them in, went right to work on them and with the, help of the veterinarian the next morning, saved their lives. But she lives in fear mat the next time she might not be so lucky. Our hope is that whoever the sadist is who would do such a miserable deed would have just a little pang of conscience and stay his hand for the next time. A , A comparison of impact forces may illustrate this point a bit more effectively. A bicycle rider may be travelling 10 miles an hour. An augomoblle may be travelling at 35 miles an hour, a legal speed on many of our neighborhood streets. If the Bicyclist is riding on the correct side of the street, which is the right hand side, the differential of speed is 25 miles an hour. If hit by the car, he is pushed forward, in the direction he is going, and may travel 50 feet or more in coming to a stop. If the bicyclist Is riding on the wrong side of the road, facing traffic, like a pedestrian does, the speed differential is 45 miles an hour, nearly double the impact speed. Further, Instead of being pushed, and having a considerable distance to decelerate, he is stopped instantly on impact, and thrown back until the car hitting him stops. The young bike rider is no match for the 2 tons of steel hurtling at him. He would fare better falling off the tallest building in our Neighborhood onto solid concrete. There is an excellent little leaflet on bicycle safety put out by the Los Angeles Police Department. It contains 8 safety checks for the bicyclist. I will these for you next week. Meanwhile, urge the bicyclists in your household to ride on the right hand side of the road. In addition to obeying the law, they are much safer that way. re-ve- ANDERSON'S BUILD A GARAGE, CARPORT OR BOTH FOR YOUR CAR ew iletgylogg KINDERGARTEN 299(T South 3435East ENROLL NOW for 1961-6- 2 program Language program included.
