HU 89 Items include everything from infants wear to appliances. What is "one person's trash is anothers rummage, accord ing to one of the board members. Antique collectors have located articles at their past rummage sales for which they had long searched. At present, one shopper is hoping to find a brass- - bed. Another hopes someone will turn in an old fashioned dictionary stand so she can buy it. All the articles are donated to the Woman's Board which in turn gives its service in sorting, cleaning, and selling them. The Board this year is composed of 50 women and has been in existence for approximately 30 years. Articles at the rummage sate will sell from 5 cents up to $10 for something in fine condition. Any merchandise left ever will be picked up by the Salvation Army. Proceeds from the sate will go to the Westminster Col- - Bright lege to provide scholarships and to buy Beaded equipment. One year the proceeds refurnished a dormitory. Last year they were used to purchase a much needl'd microscope. Smith,. one of tho teachers of a speedreading class which specializes in improving the reading ability of The classes are held at 1565 E. teen-ager- s. 33rd S. Nationwide, classes' are being formed and home-studcourses are being sold to improve the reading habits and speed, of adults whose pressure of work demands an increased rate of reading. s Mr Smith and Mrs lone believe that the sooner reading speed is gained in life the more interests it opens up for the individual. For that reason, they decided to specialize in junior high and high school students. Ray is at present In his senior year at the University of Utah where he is majoring in English and foreign languages. lone is a graduate of Idaho State College and is a teacher of English on high school level. She also rff. teaches speed reading at BYU and at the University of Utah. In preparation for the eosrse of study they wanted to offer students, they did extensive research on speed reading, always keeping paramount the needs and requirements of teenagers. In Spring, 1961, they presented their first lessons to three classes. During the summer, they taught 14 more classes to approximately 200 students. The students reading speed when tested before the training, averaged between wpm. Upon completion of the class, the average reading rate had 0 increased to wpm, with about 25 per cent of the enrollment demonstrating an even higher improvement Helen Jane Pond, 1565 E. 33 S., a student at Granite High, told us, I doubled my speed but it should have been better. I have a girlfriend who went up to 900 wpm. She thinks the coarse helps tremendously if you put your mind to it and decide to work at it and not goof off. Linda Walkenhorat, 1520 Zenith Ave., an Irving Junior High student, claims it increased her desire to read for enjoyment aside from the required reading for school. She increased her speed from 183 to 500. When I took the class, I wanted to improve my reading speed and comprehension, said Marcia Garff, 2634 everly St., a Highland High Student. It resulted in improving my study habits as well. Youd never believe it, but when you increase your speed, your comprehension gets better because youre forced to concentrate mere. I was 180 when I started. Now I can read' 1,000 wpm if the material isnt toe deep." Two projection machines are used to help improve the students speed and to increase comprehension one is a tachis-toscop- e which is used to flash Hor-rock- groups of numbers and words on a screen at a controlled rate of speed ranging between 114 sec. to 100th of a second. The purpose is to widen the stud- ents eye span and to increase the .speed of eye perception. The other maehine is a controlled reader projector and flashes stories on the screen at a speed ranging from 100 wpm to 1,000. The projector is used chiefly to stop students from making an gressions in reading and to reduce the number of stops the eye makes white progressing across a line. cracker-bo- x philosopher was a trditional figure of the Old West.
