Mr. and Mrs. Larry Wood, 620 East Vine Street, are the proud parents of a baby daughter who arrived in time to win the sixth annual First Baby of the Year contest sponsored by local merchants. In answer to some questions about the who 'sig at the start of this column, as to the of the drummer is, he is Sonny Payne 1956 of Count Basie band shot in the winter at the Fair Grounds. For the photographers it wa$shot with a Yashica Mat at 1100 at f5. 6 with Tir-- X film. What makes the difference between Brubeck and say, Ahmand Jamal, is that Jamal, using piano the same as Brubeck, improvises on the cord structure in the first part, thereby switching the main theme around so that it sounds like the bridge. While Brubeck willdohismainimprovisisngin the bridge, after the break, Jamal will improvise on the whole song. By playing what he (Jamal) feels to be tne theme, or how he interprets the theme, he stresses improvisation throughout. Tne break in both cases sounds pretty much the same;making room for the bridge with subtle 'ramblings on the keyboards. The bridge in Brubeck's case will feature Paul Desmond on sax carrying the load of improvising. Desmond will take the cord structure and work in, around, over and through it, while all the time interpreting his emotions with music and the instrument. Jamal keeps improvising in the cord structure, with little regard to the main theme as a basis (except for struc- -. ture, key, tempo, etc. ) and he, too, will interpret emotions with music and the instrument. With a return to the main theme, or 'close-ou- t, Brubeck will combine the theme (dominant) with the improvisation done in the bridge (secondary) to form a " melody with feeling" , if you will. Jamal will take his main theme, and also combine the bridge and theme to form the t. As you can see, it leaves a lot to be desired if your are the type that prefers a straight' song to one where a person's emo tions are projected into music. - Even as basic as I try to be, it is hard to leave out the entire format of each musician and say BY MAIL WITH ASJHI FROM vlS)lilL CREDIT COMPANY Swing Easy AM5-42- AM6-88- 96 47 2 CONVENIENT LOCATIONS & Granger Midvale t' If You Love GOD AND AMERICA CHICK TWO' u o:uii Listen to "Lifeline" Monday thru Friday CHEWTHEff KCPX Radio 7:30 iiiiiyj to 7i45 pim.
