Show 8 U.S. Steel chief warns of import steel danger PITTSBURGH, Pa.. United States Steel Corporation has filed a petition with the U. S. Treasury Department seeking relief from the dumping of certain carbon steel products into the United States by Japan. In filing the petition, U. S. Steel emphasized the lost employment to steelworkers and the continuing severe impact on the American steel industry caused by these imports. The petition seeks relief under an existing antidumping statute by imposing special dumping duties on certain Japanese steel products: structural, plate, hot and cold rolled sheet, galvanized sheet and welded standard pipe. The petition was filed in the midst of employee layoffs and facility shutdowns currently being announced by some domestic steel for sale in our own domestic markets . . . foreign producers, however, in cooperation with their governments, arc selling steel in this country below their full production and transportation costs. it to maintain good levels of employment in Theyre doing their own countries with no regard for the unemployment it generates here. If that rate continues, it will set a new record for steel imports, in a year that will be far from a record for domestic steel consumption. It has 20 million been estimated that tons of steel is the equivalent of more than 100,000 jobs. It will mean that one out of every five tons of steel used in this country in 1977 will have been produced overseas," he said, with a substantial loss to the American economy in jobs, in consumer spending, in related products bought and sold, in tax revenues and all the rest." Speer said that the American steel industry is the producer of steel low-co- companies and steel employees here at home by ignoring the fact that most of this steel trade is unfair and illegal. It can also lead to dangerous consequences if this situation continues unabated and makes our economy dependent on foreign steel.
