Six women are the first accredited paralegals in Utah. They are recent graduates of a nine month legal training course designed to train competent paralegals to work with Utah attorneys. The course was taught by Gary James Joslin, a Provo attorney. Graduates of Joslins course are: Lea Walters, Marilyn Harrison, Geniel Johnson, Pam Prettyman, Peggy Critchlow and Terri Dyer, for information coll 355-722- 4 The role of the paralegal is varied depending upon the Trolley Square Lunch and dinner menu abilities and competence of the legal assistant. Dr. Gary Child, a state attorney who works with the Law Research Institute, described the paralegal service as the only way to preserve the lawyer-legal system as we know it. He said that high legal costs are making competent legal help difficult for most people to afford. Child explained that many legal cases, divorces for example, could easily be handled by a paralegal. Instead, he said, divorces are usually taken on by young attorneys who charge a very high fee for their services. He said he would like to see Utah paralegals attain a greater working relationship with state attorneys. Terri Dyer, a former legal secretary for Mt. Bell, is one of six Utah women to complete the first paralegal course ever offered in the She described the state. course as rewarding, interesting and tough. Dyer expects to directly apply her new legal knowledge to her job. She is still working as a legal secretary because of the small size of the Mt. Bell legal staff. The first paralegal course was taught two nights a week for three hours each night. Dyer said the homework consisted of at least 12 hours of study each week.
