The new bank would be named The Bank. Blaine Harris, president of Six or Envirowest, said, seven major banks have indicated an interest in buying the site from us. But its not for sale. Envirowest owns an oasis of 45 acres zoned commercial in radius the center of a two-mil- e zoned residential. They plan to join with a Texas firm to build a shopping center on the land, hoping to include The Bank in that center. An expert has predicted more traffic would flow by our property than a combined total of traffic on 13th East, 7th East and State Streets, Harris said. Demographics of the area are unbelieveable, he continued. Harris said seven schools are being built in the immediate area. Sandy is one of the three fastest growing cities in the nation, he said. Envirowest is a Salt Lake City developer of residential and commercial properties. Nearing completion of Scandia Village, near four-year-o- the Canyon Racquet ld Gub, they are starting construction of Finlandia, a residential complex near Willow Creek Country Club. Now three will get you one on whether he will be the Democratic nominee, and its even money that he will be the next Chief Executive. Whats more, a more unlikely aspirant would not have seemed possible. If there is anyone who was a fellow Governor during Carters one term (including Utahs outgoing Calvin L. Rampton) who has the slightest respect or regard for him, he has yet to surface. Those in Georgia who know him best, ranging from Lester Maddox on the right to Julian Bond on the left, say Carter is a liar and a cheat. Yet, in all but three primaries held into the first week of April, Carter has gained at least a plurality, and now Rampton is saying the nominee will be either Carter or Hubert . lib Humphrey. There is some prospect at this writing that Californian Jerry Brown may blunt the Carter blitz, but Bayh, Jackson, Shriver and the rest would tell Brown not to start counting chickens presently. Why Carter? To me, the question is a bit like asking, Why Doomsday?, but a nation that has survived the last 34 years will probably make it through a Carter regime as well. There seem at least three reasons that Carters star approaches ascendency. First, Carter is not tainted with Washington D.C. service. This does not appear to be a year in which a federal government background is an asset. This is quite properly so. For over three decades we have turned to government spending as a solution to each and every problem which has confronted the nation and - Humphrey - to the contrary notwithstanding - have observed precious little beneficial result for our pains. Second. Carter is a Southerner. Roman . Catholics generally united behind John F. Kennedy in 1960 to prove that one of their own could become President. Many Southerners are that way about JC in 1976. George Wallace eroded the Northern bias in 1968 anti-Southe- rn and 1972, and Carter is the beneficiary of those Wallace forays. Third , Carter is slick. His was the most campaign memorable line thus far when he said, Being called a liar by Lester Maddox is like being called ugly by a toad. At that, Carter does have the ability to date to be all things to all people. Some speculate that his "ethnic purity remark was a deliberate flub, and that his subsequent apology for its use was d meant to reinforce a assurance to Poles, Italians, and the like that he, in his heart, understood their resistence to Black . left-hande- demands for November will see if wc end up with Carter. If we do, wc probably shall deserve what we block-bustin- get. g. |
