Rumors abound about the future of the Sheraton Hotel in Salt Lake City, Everyone knowledgeable about the project seems to have taken an oath of secrecy. The few facts available about the project are printed below. Sheraton Hotel public relations department has issued a statement saying, We are still under negotiations with Richards Street Development. No final agreement has been reached. On December 15, 1974, the Zoning Appeal Board of Salt Lake City considered the Sheratons appeal for a variance. Representing the proposed project were Harlan Nelson of Richards Street Development, together with architects Harold Beecher, William E. Paulson and Steve Warr. Nelson requested a height variance. The proposed building would be approximately 33 feet over the height permitted by law. Normally the developers would be required to set the building back 15 feet from the street in order to build a 232-fohigh tower. Development company representatives asked the board to allow the structure to rise 198 feet with no setback, then build a k tower that would bring the building to a 232-foheight. at financial institutions. Changes of basic differences between banks, savings and loans and other such institutions are inevitable. In December, 1975, the U.S. Senate passed the Financial Institutions Act of 1975. The act authorized savings and loans to have checking accounts and banks to pay interest on checking accounts. It allowed Congress to remove the difference in interest rates paid by banks and savings and loans. It created what opponents have called a super agency, combining functions formerly performed by separ-- . ate regulatory agencies, and reducing the power of present agencies. The House of Representatives is currently writing a Financial Institutions Act of their own. The House version is based on the Senate version as well as several studies that have been conducted by committees over the past six years. Gene Donovan, president of Prudential Federal Savings and Loan, recently testified before a House subcommittee on banking about proposed legislation. Im delighted that Congress has taken on the job of looking at the warp and woof of the fabric of financial institutions, Donovan says. continued on page 5b once , construction began, it would take two years to build the hotel.
