Show Page' 6b US Steel Names Tax Administrator Higher taxes on raw materials and the competitive position of the steel industry has sparked the appointment of a San Francisco man as staff tax administrator for U.S. Steels mountain region. James A. Thompson, named to the new position this week, will be active in administering taxes related to U.S. Steel plants, mines and other locations in Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho and Montana. He will make his new offices in the Kennecott Building. Thompson began his steel industry career in 1951 as an accountant with Republic Steel Corporation in Minnesota. He later became district accountant at Duluth for Republics northern ore mines. He joined U.S. Steel Company at Coleraine, Min nesota. Four years later, he was named a senior costs analyst for U.S. Steels iron mining operation in the state. In 1956, Thompson joined U.S. Steel's tax division as a tax analyst at Duluth. He was transferred to San Francisco in 1972 as staff tax assistant.
