Students from the Arlington and Grant elementary schools spent a day last week observing the soil conservation program being carriei out by the Salt Lake Soil Conservation-District, according to James M. Gatherum, SCS technician. Class Instructors were Keith Jex and Hal Madsen, Grant, and Joseph Nielsen and Lysle Tuckfield, Arlington. The tour had its beginning In , Big Cottonwood Canyon when-the multiple uses of a watershed were discussed. It was pointed out by Mr. Gatherum and Bernell McAllister, Murray SCS technician, that nature had to be held in balance to make full use of the watershed. The important users, water, recrention, summer homes and grazing, must be kept in close working harmony the youtlu were told. The 1 20 students became aware of the burned over area near the canyon and what can happen in a short time when vegetation cover is remoded from the mountainside. It was explained that a cooperative conservation program is being carried out by a num GRANGER . Another Interesting pha.se of the trip was the land leveling and concrete ditch lining program at Edward Isaacsons of Granite where a great saving Of irrigation water is being effected through the applying of a sound conservation program. Mart Jordenson's irrigation and fish pond was also a stop. The youths found this project to be an example of efficient use of water. Waste water from the orchard is collected in thi pond for the fish as well as pumped back on the orchard. The pupils also visited the Draper area where they saw how windbreaks prevent sand from . blowing thus protecting orchards and making living conditions in home3 more pleasant. ber of local, Union Fort DUP Camp Elects New Officers Funeral Services Held Karen Edmonds.
