In fact only on one or two of the 10 questions were we sure of the answer. It was amazing how many things we take from granted as to its originality. 1 ' Page 5 . mHmmmmiiuun,mm,mmmmm.mmmmmmKmmmm. rt Thursday, December 12, 1957 MURRAY (UTAH) EAGLE LDS Temple Nuptial Rite Unites Dorothy Ellis, Kenneth Lindsay u ffr-Lw- ard JAYCETTES WRAP GIFTS FOR CHRISTMAS PROJECT Murray Jaycettes met Dec. 9 at the home of Mrs. William Dunn, 350 Saunders St, for their regular monthly meeting. We had never even wondered how these flowers got their name let alone where they grow. We do know that they grow most commonly in the Hawaiian islands. However they were named for Joel R. Poinsett who was an American statesman and minister to Mexico. The can remember pictures of Santa have always fat, merry ole gent with a white beard. Had wonder who conceived the idea of him lookever to you stopped It like back in the late 1800s when an American started that? ing cartoonist by the name of Thomas Nast pictured Santa as we know him today. Many countries associate different names with this holiday instead of Santa Claus. Other monickers for this happiest of fellas are Jolly ole St. Nicholas or Kris Kringle. There actually was a St. Nicholas who was born in the port city of Patara in Southern Turkey and the name Kris Kringle means Christ Child. Ever since we him as a depicted The one question of this quiz we were sure of had to do with the famous writing of Clement Clark Moore. Right away we knew he was best known for "A Visit to Saint Nicholas", which is better known as "Twas the Night Before Christmas". Ever since our kids knew "Christmas is acoming . . ." they've played their recording of "Night Before Christmas" until they too almost have it memorized. Have you ever wondered when people started observing Christmas? Childhood stories tell us the first Christmas was when Christ was born but in those days we doubt they celebrated the day like we do now. The first year Christmas was observed irt England was back in 521 A.D., during the reign of King Arthur. Wanna make a guess as to which is the most widely translated Christmas carol? The song, "O Come All Ye Faithful", or just as commonly known by its Latin title "Adeste Fideles", has been translated in 119 different languages. We had no Idea there were even that many languages in use today. Another popular Christmas carol that returns each year, "O Little Town of Bethlehem", was written back in 1868 making it almost 90 years old. These were just a few things this quiz pointed out to us. So many things about Christmas are taken for granted along with the presents and celebration. If kind of fun, and most Interesting, to delve into the background to see what makes Christmas what it is as we know H today. ' Undoubtedly there is still much more to learn about this wonderful holiday. Bye now.
