The vote by districts is given elsewhere on this page. Ernest Smith will challenge incumbent J. Clifford Hansen and Rose faces Everett Berger on November 6. The only surprise in the outcome was the defeat of Sherman G. Fn ezo, who was expected to run second at least. Ililmer Larson robbed Freeze of 100 votes in his own district, enough to give Berger his comfortable margin. It seems apparent that if Mr. Larson had not been a candidate Freeze would have been nominated. The total vote was nearly equal to the number counted for the final election of 1943, making it clear that the decision has been made and that Smith and Rose will bo our next mayor and commissioner. Rarely have such impressive majorities been given two newcomers in a Primary election. The large number of candidates was the reason for the heavy balloting. This factor will be missing in the general election. Both Smith and Rose are determined to see that their supporters do not take the election for granted. A light vote on November 6 could result in a close contest. Fred Anderson has pledged his support to Mr. Smith. Mr. Norton, who ran third with 254, has not announced who he intends to support, if any.
