There is no superstition or prophesying ahout this sign. When warm weather has come to stay (until cold weather returns in the autumn) every owner of property and tenant should instinctively feel it his duty to remove the evidences of winter's ravages and to aid and augument nature in her work of rchcautification.i Every spring clean-u- p program should include disposal of winter's accumulation of litter and decayed vegetation, repairing. and repainting of buildings, and landscape gardening'. Landscape gardening is no longer associated with large estates alone. Cleanliness about the person or the home costs nothing. clean-u- p need involve no expense, except of a moderate amount of labor on the part, of the householders. If there ever were excuses for unclcanliness they were removed long ago. clean-u- p What is the compensation of a community-wid- e of communIt the health the campaign? improves general ity by removing deposits that are breeding places of disease germs and disease carrying insects. A clean town is a better place in which to live than one that is unsanitary and unsightly. And the best community advertising is the appearance of being "cleaned-up- , and painted-up.- " HONESTY OF THE YOUNG A community Scientific investigators are learning many facts about children which it is suspected parents have long known. After the experts have learned all there is to learn from their three years' study of 'honesty" among school children, they will probably know no more than every parent of a normal child already knows. Tests have been devised to discover tendencies to lie, cheat or steal., At the same time ordinary intelligence tests were given in order to show the relation between good sense and good character, if any. The results indicate the most intelligent child is likely to be most honest. A number of questions designed to probe the religious and filial feelings were answered as might have been expected, and the children were convicted of Apparently they all thoucht it desirable that they should seem pious and dutiful, and they thought it their duty to nvd the P,;m cvery (jayt (n p;. Up ir,.k(-;n tbe street, to 0 ' kindly to their parents and instructors, and to trv to he license number of a motor vehicle if they suspected driver of speeding. Most children have an uncanny knack of reading the tntn of a questioner. They are as shrewdly observant as monkeys, and a really intelligent inquirer often has to resort to trickery to get to the bottom of their little minds. ." 1 ever-lengtheni- dc-y'- 1 DIRE PROPHECIES What that gives prophecies of evil such popularity ? Hope springs eternal in the human breast, but it is equally certain that man likes to be frightened and relishes the thrill of menace around him. KJsc. whv the interest with uM.-he reads prophecies of world destruction, whv the gusto with which forecasts of wars are swallowed, why the weight given to prophecies of economic upheaval' and cataclysm? The most reasonable answer to this question U that man likes such prophecies because of the 'joy tint he derives frn-their failure. He is secretly confident of escape from whatever besets him. and, by that token, he likes to be tricked into believeing that the peril from which he will escape is of the direst. world-wreckin- g v.-- 4 4 J.45-l.lt(- Orle Neln (lis: I1..1 le Purnli.ir l rlt!: llll.ro, ( 11 0 I II .10 4 C n 13- 43 " 0 . 45 4 3- 0 l 13-- l 'to 45 on 'fl 45 I en "2 !3 " II I I 1 2 I i.o a 4 ( 5 .. 0 J ioi 1 . Jesus, himself, according to Gospel writers, did little work but lived Instead on the gifts of devoted women (Luke 8:1-3)- . He commanded his disciples to live like beggars, in preference to the material rewards that spring from work well done. And to his followers he advised consideration of the birds and lilies of the feld, which neither sow nor reap but are oared for by their Heavenly Father.
