A and more of a memory. The-- Fourth of July which small boys and girls awaited as eagerly as Chrlstmaa itself, a day of toy orators torpedo, of celluloid-collareand ice cream socials, has been transformed into an Independence Day of quiet and dignity. "Rut how can we teach our children what Fourth of July really means?' a mother asked riot long ago, uddlng, "you must meet a child on his own ground things ranst be explained to him In terms that he understands." This mother, who ia fortunate enough never to have been forced to tlie tragic task of binding up mangled little fingers shredded by "innocent ia argutna; that a child must be taught the meaning of liberty and freedom and Independence by lighting a pin wheel or hurting a torpedo cane upon the pavement. It is difficult for us who passed rhlldhood In the old fashioned noisy Fourth of July decade to remember that our Roman randlet and "flower po'" meant anything lofty and Inspiring to us anything but a rollicking holiday. Safe and aane Fourths are pretty well established but the argument that tome way should be found to make green the meaning of what those periwigged builders of our natioa did back on July 4, 1770, is a worthy one. The great purpose of a Fourth of July obscrvaaet la Dot only to pay respect to the early framers of thla government but to measure the patriotism of this with that day, to determine whether thla nation has " beeo trut to'tnt'tSnh.' whether it baa kept aloft the torch, whether ita wlUlugneas to sacrifice for the common good deserve a place with the sacriflcet of the fathers of the nation. Such speculation la In order In these timet and a quiet, dignified observance, turn aa thla dty haa In mind will be helpful. d end. Members of the N.
