Surely "What Utah Makes Makes I'tiih" holds an important message for the Utah farmer. There has iheen an apparent improvement in the matter of the construction and maintaining of the roads in Salt Lake county during the past year, for which the lioard of County Commissioners is to be commended. We especially approve of (he concrete pavement recently constructed on South Main Street from 21st South to 33rd So. We join the citizens of Street. Murray and vicinity in urging that be conthis concrete pavement tinued on down Slain Street to 4Mb South Street as a verv much needed and desirable Improvement. We would also call attention to the need of paving on 23rd East Street from N'lellson's corner north to the city limits; to the very urgent need for the widening of the pave ment on Highway Drive to take cure of the ever Increasing traffic. The papers convey the information that the road from Salt Lake City to the Municipal Air Field Is to bo paved. We hope that this report is. well founded and wish to I'ttniiirage the city and county to the lurrying on of tlds promised meritorious project and wisli to call attention to the need of connecting the promised pavepavement with the present At pre-oment on Redwood Road. the Redwood Road is paved to :nnl South Street. This pavement should be continued north to a connection with the proposed 1'iiv cim-n- t to th AlriKtrt. This, ilieii. would form one of the arterial highways of the county and i!!T"id two entries from the west into the city over already completed vindti. ts -- one on North Temple Street mid the other on Fourth linn 2 nt -- tsik - South Street. We are pleased to learn that the concrete pavement on the Bingham Highway will be completed on Bingham during 1028. We are very strongly of the opinion that the time has come when Salt Lake County should begin on a consistent and regular propgram of highway improvements. The more imixirtant, and heavily traveled roads should lie paved. Othir Important, but at this time less used roads should be widened, straightened, drained and graded to better serve the present traffic and prepare them for paving when necessary. Minor or less imimrtant roads should also Ix straightened and widened as rapidly as possible. A program calling for 5 miles of paving each year would not be ex cessive and would Insure the county of a modern highway system within a few years. At the present time, irauie is incrcnsniK umcu more rapidly than are road improve-meats. Thirty-thirSouth Street, from river. Mill Creek to the Jordan should le improved with a modern concrete pavement at least 2 feet in width. This highway carries n heavy traffic at present and should be paved projierly and not in a make-shimanner. We thoroughly agree with that large body of citizens who are greatly opixised to the proposal of the county commissioners to put a the existing 2 inch blacktop on but Is This atemporary surfacing. the which with exiedioiit costly county should not proceed. The estimated $.".5.(HK to $00,000 which it is promised to sjiend for putting a 2lnch coat of patented black itfivemeiit on alsmt 4 mile of this highway would give the taxpayers and citizens much greater service if the money were sis'iit 2 mill's of in constructing alwtit heavy concrete pavement on the highway, say from Mill Cwk west, and in filling the holes and maintaining the remainder of the highway for one or two years I finlonger until paving can patent- the anced. The money for the asphalt goes to California, the royal ly goes to Boston and the pavement goes to pieces, all in a short time and the taxpayers are out. It Is our belief that the com mlssioncrs should arrange with the contractor to construct a good concrete pavement on S.'lrd South street Instead of the promised black make shift giving the people a real pavement and keep the money In Utah.
