Show THE MURRAY EAGLE, THURSDAY, DECEMBER HOME STUDY P.y Home E. Allen Batemun study subject In the la a much debuted home as well us In the school. Educators who attack the practice of assigning pupils work to do at home hm.v that It cu courages dishonesty; that It placet; a burden upon the parents in the cases where pupils have difficulty with their work ; and that compar atively few homes are equipped to give the pupil the proper environ nient for study. They hum ilieir reasons up by nuylui; that the Rcuool that relies upon home study Is deluding Itself by believing that f home it pays. The opponents study have gone so far in recent years as to advocate that no home Btudy be given either to high school Htudents, or to grade pupils. The principal objection is that proper study conditions are Impossible in most homes. Although there may be u great amount of truth In these objections to home study, experience shows that most children must do more work than they have time to do in school If they are In finish their work in the commonly accepted time. The greatest truth in educaare tion Is that no two children exactly alike, either physically or mentally. Most children find that either all or a few of the school subjects are difficult for them. Since we are teaching so many things in u short class room day of five and u half to six hours, there In not enough time to let pupils double tip on difficult subject. When teachers have large classes aud must do their preparation work and correcting of papers outside of classroom time, it Is unjust to ask them to spend much extra time to work with pupils who have difficulty. Most school systems require teachers to so organize their work that individual help may be given to pupils within the class period. Then the slower pupil is expected to sjkmiiI some time in home study so that be may keep up with the group. It is certain that if home study is eliminated entirely, then our school day must be lengthened or many pupiLs who now finish high school at the end of the twelth school year, must take thirteen or fourteen years to do the work. Then there Is the problem of the pupil to whom school work comes easy. Unless the parent or school la providing extra duties such as music lessons or civic sen Ice this pupil iwiy develop bad habits localise of Idleness. The better Is to give extra duties not connected with the class. The alternative is to increase home study-workn an average of on hour n day In the grades aud more than that in the high school. Others will need to study at home in certain grades or certain subjects only. A few may need to do very little home study. If report card shows that a pupil is not doing well, the parents should check with the teacher and see that the pupil either makes better use of his present study lime, or increases the amount. Under any conditions of home study, the parent should watch carefully for three things: 1. Provide a ipilet place for study, with a good table ami a good light. 2. Insist upon regular study hours. it. Care tdioiild .be taken that the pupil is not harmed by having his home work done by some one Mackay of Taylorsviile, Thursday. Covers were laid for 23.
